So I'm tired of our crappy bed from ikea and the wife wants something that'll last. We're not light people but we're also not whales, yet our ikea beds always have issues with the slats sliding or the bed creaking... So we'd like to go for quality.

The problem is the range I'm seeing for beds is all over the place - from $200 to $5,000+. What are specs, brands, price points, etc. to look for if I want something sturdy? I hate furniture shopping

pics of wife or you named your fist

go to a freakin mediocre furniture store like rooms-to-go and check it out, see if you like them. I would say it will be atleast $500...

bought one a couple years ago for about $700 (just the frame/headboard, not a complete bedroom set)... look for local furniture stores online and go to a showroom to look around.

Dude...that's like asking, "How long is a string?"

Obviously, prices and quality are gonna be all over the place.

IIRC, we paid $1500 (about 50% off) for our oak Cal-king bed frame...about 15 years ago. You can get good quality bed frames for $500...or $5000...it all depends on what you want in a bed...and what you're willing to pay.

$500 or so to start for something decent. My wife and I bought a decent platform bed with a nice headboard (shelves, grommet for wires, etc.), but it's only pine or something similar. Ours was around $400, but it was a floor model / closeout. That's only for the bed frame, so add on whatever it'll cost you for your mattress of choice. If you want good hardwood, you're looking at about $1000 minimum.

Don't even bother with anything made of particle board.

The sturdiest beds will be very expensive in all wood. Something like this http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Master-P...g_bs_3733101_1

or the better models can sometimes fit inside a cheaper wood bed frame making them more sturdy.

My first bedroom set was a bit expensive and very popular (it was on a few of the 80-90's TV shows and movies). It was great and all wood, the furniture was all 1/2" real wood and lasted years still looking like new.

I went back to college a second time and picked up a headboard, dresser/mirror, two night stands and an armoire for like $300 new the first day a local store opened by me. Turns out in the rush to get things set up (and they weren't officially open, I saw the set in the window and liked it), he quoted me his price on the set.

That set was MDF mostly and contact type paper veneer. It looked like real wood and was even lined on the interiors of the drawers. I bought a heavy duty frame and attached the headboard to it. It's in my kid's room now and he has finally figured out how to destroy the tops of the stuff .

Whatever you do, I'd "test drive" the set more or less in the showroom. Some beds really flex a lot and that will lead to the headboard slamming into the wall for 'adult fun' at night.

From the link one post up:

"The Smartbase mattress foundation supports up to 2400 lbs. of evenly distributed weight across the surface of the frame"

Jesus Christ. If you have 2,400 pounds in a queen bed you have other problems.

For what it's worth, my wife and I bought a Martha Stewart bedroom set from K-Mart in 2004 which was about $300 if I remember right. Bed frame and head board, night stands and bench seat. We bought the best queen mattress sold at The Original Mattress Factory ($700 back then). This set is in our guest bedroom now and is like new. Not bad for $1,000 ten years ago.

Edit: Found a picture of the set.

Sleep on the floor, yo.

Only load related issues you'd have to deal with are the floor and the mattress. As long as it's not a waterbed, you're cool. And if the floor caves in, you got bigger problems.

Seriously, I have a cheap Ikea bed. It was less than $50, but what a piece of shit. The legs are shaky and the wood boards cracked. I don't jump on the pos...

I highly doubt that anyone not in the furniture industry would be able to come close to answering this question with anything beyond "Well, I bought...". It's like asking "How much should a hamburger cost"?

Furniture isn't marketed like cars or appliances, so all but a handful of brand names are unknown to most people, even though hundreds of them exist. Price points are pretty much whatever you can afford. Someone making $40,000 per year simply doesn't buy a $50,000 bedroom set or a $15,000 sofa.

Like I always say, giving answers to questions like this is always tricky. This is because of the many factors to be considered and some questions to be answered before making such decision. Only you can provide the answers. There is no point repeating was has already been answered before. I read this amazing guide on *********** that helped me picked my queen bed frame which I am still enjoying.

Jessie, I've always recognized your level-headed advice, and I applaud you for it. You're truly an asset to this community.

With your help, the fellow who asked this question just two years ago (nearly to the day) should be sleeping in a nice bed very soon.
