Has anyone ever checked how much watts a HDD adds to the overall amp draw of a PSU. As in how much more electric it takes to operate.

Not really. It's so little it doesn't matter. I 2-second google search confirmed:

Solid State Drive SSD
2.5" Hard Disk Drive HDD
3.5" Hard Disk Drive HDD

Typical Power Consumption
0.6 to 2.8 W
0.7 to 3 W
6.5 to 9 W

The largest power draw for 3.5" disk drives comes when they are spinning up rather than when they are operating. The specifications for the drive should list the maximum current draw on the 12 volt line when spinning up. Typical values are 2 amps (corresponding to 24 watts) or 1.75 amps (corresponding to 21 watts). NAS vendors have to pay attention to these numbers, but as ketchup79 said, it's not an issue for your typical PC.

My question deals with the 120v side of the PSU. So if I plug a kill-a-watt meter into the wall, and then hook the computer to it, and start adding platter drives, how much watts does it use?

How much it pulls on the 12v rail and 5v rail I don;t know how to calculate into the 120v side.

Already been answered in this thread; typically 5 to 10 watts for a 7200 rpm drive.

If you want exact figures, look at the drive manufacturer's web site for that drive model.

Samsung 103SJ 1 TB, 7200 rpm: 4.7 idle, 7 watts max

Western Digital Green 3 TB: 4.6 read/write, 3.3 idle, 0.4 standby.

Those are typical figures. It's so small as to be inconsequential unless you need several hands to count them.

Most of the 3.5" drives I've tested add about a 10W draw (when spinning) according to my Kill-A-Watt. Active vs idle makes little difference, maybe 1W. Of course they draw more when spinning up but that only lasts a few seconds.

10W is actually a lot when in 24/7 operation.

I will have 4TB x2 and plan to upgrade to 4TB x4.

Thanks for the info.
