lol just wait till you get to college chemistry our school had a distro room for assorted chemicals, and a bunch of tools and glassware were right next to that place. You break a test tube? Well go and get some more. But often, we used this tiny test tubes that chemicals would basically make impossible to clean and we just tossed them.
Then again, this all comes out of tuition... and ordering in bulk like they do, it's not a big deal.

well.

If the school orders new supplies every semester anyway (which they do):
*The only time costs include telling him to give them money, and putting the money in an envelope somewhere
*shipping cost is almost irrelevant.

So actually, in this case, they are very close.

No, it's a way to make sure that HS students, who are not, as a whole, the most responsible demographic, have some incentive not to screw around in chemistry class. You break it, you buy it. That way they don't have a bunch of teenagers abusing lab equipment.

It's just a way to encourage people to be more careful.

That said, it didn't stop me from breaking a thermometer (while trying to pull it out of one of those rubber stoppers) and ending up with the broken end jammed into my hand. I can still remember the dawning realization right after it happened that I had yelled, "Son of a BITCH!" when it pierced my hand and the teacher was standing immediately next to me.

Lol i remember in Chem 1A in college they had lockers for all of us and they would conduct inventory checks at the beginning and end. Maybe it was Chem 1B or whatever but we had a chance near the end to salvage missing stuff in a bin full of crap. So if you were missing a test tube, just grab an extra one. Hah. I don't think it really mattered if u broke stuff in other chem classes like my upper div chem class I just took. Maybe if you broke the expensvie stuff like a dilatometer, you would get screwed, but a test tube? Ehhh.

Then again you're talking HS huh, so rewinding back then I think my chem teacher did say we had to pay if we broke small stuff.

You're getting off easy, we have mandatory $25 breakage cards that are non refundable. I've bout 3 so far for each lab class I take and I've never broken anything. UIUC will screw you like that.
