I need a crap load of weight to weigh down my mustangs rear end for the winter weather. I guess they weigh about 40-50 pounds. How much does 1 bag cost and where could i get it from?

Why not a few bags of kitty litter? Topsoil isn't cheap unless you buy bulk. And 50 pounds IS NOT BULK.

Is it sad that I remember your thread about looking for a winter car? I believe you had posted one asking what to do, right?

Just mix up some concrete and pour it in your trunk, that way it won't move all around in your trunk link a bag of dirt or sand would.

Get good snow tires and learn to drive. Lots of people manage to make it through winter with rear wheel drive cars.

go to lowes, home depot, or any car parts store. they will have 50lb bags of sand very cheap. all you need is 2-4 of them. it will be around $10

thats a LOT cheaper then 100-200 lbs of topsoil. and yes it will work. i would throw it in my mustang and light trucks

edit: also if you get stuck the sand will provide some traction.

Cat litter is denser than topsoil so would probably work better. Growing up, my parents always used water softener salt to weigh down the car. If you don't have a water softener, you could use the salt for your driveway.

Just go to Home Depot/Lowes, go to the Gardening department, and look for the heaviest and cheapest bag of anything you can find (topsoil, sand, rocks, whatever).

You shouldn't need several hundred pounds of weight to gain weight to aid in traction. 200 lbs MAX should do the job. Gotta keep in mind the weight limits of the vehicle...don't want to overload springs, shocks, wheels, etc.

BTW, get the coarsest sand you can. It will help more should you need it for traction if you get stuck...

how about learning to drive better?

You do know that gas pedal works other than just at the floor, right?

Being rear wheel drive with all the weight in the engine Mustangs, particularly the 5.0 models, drive like shopping carts. They are terrible cars for winter driving conditions. Weighing down the back helps in snow. On glare ice there isn't much help for them. A light touch on the gas doesn't hurt but they are all but predestined gutter balls.

Mustang's are front heavy but it's not like they are all front weight...its about a 55/45 split.

RWD existed a long time prior to FWD in ice prone areas...FWD is magnitudes better though.

How about we ignore the advice of the guy from Florida?

$15 in sand tossed in the back makes your life easier.

Topsoil in 40lb bags is $1 at HD, if they haven't stored them for the winter. They mark up sand for winter because that is what everyone uses.

40 pound bag of soil can go for a few dollars (cheap non-fertilized stuff) Better off getting tubes of sand.
