How much energy am i wasting by never turning off my 20" LCD monitor?

my computer is off, but i never turn off my monitor. it just goes to sleep mode.

How much energy am i wasting?

It's probably still drawing a few watts in standby.. if the PC is off, why not turn off the LCD as well? It's got nothing to display, unless the power button is out of the way to get to or something..

I think sleep mode only uses a watt or 2.

It uses a watt or two when it's off, and a couple more when in standby. If you really want to save, disconnect the cord from the wall.

You probably waste more than you think. Let's say it uses one 1 watt. The yearly comsumption in killowatt-hours is then 87.6. How much du you pay for a kilowatt-hour? $0.20? In that case you waste $17.50 a year (not considering the time you actually use the monitor).

That's $17.50 wasted a year per watt of power consumption.

Don't forget to factor in the 1 calorie to extend your arm and push the button.

And whether or not you save a lot of money, think about the life of the monitor.
If you're monitor is rated to run (a completely made up number for this example) 10,000 hours and let's say you're addicted to World of Warcrack and play 16 hours a day, you cut the lifespan of the monitor by 33%. So you'll only get to play 417 days instead of 625 days. Along with that, having your monitor on all the time could probably also increases wear and tear damage on the monitor, such as dead pixels.

I've found all those myriad devices left on standby or even 'off' (which usually isn't really off) do use a noticeable amount of power, I think. I tested it by watching the leccy meter go round with and without them. 2 PCs, 2 monitors, stereo, printer, etc...my electric consumption went down a fair bit when I remembered to always unplug the lot from the wall - trouble is that means crawling under the desk so I usually can't be bothered.

Houses should have single switches for each room, that just turns off every power outlet, or something more convenient than this anyway, now that so many devices don't seem to have genuine 'off' switches.

Here in WA, for 9 months of the year a little waste heat from devices just means running the heater a little less. So the power loss isn't really a loss at all.
