So I am going to have a BBQ. About 13 guests. We're all around 17-18. I asked one knowledgeable person how much food I need, and they said about 1/2 lb of meat per person should be plenty, the people who eat little making up for the people who eat lots. Just thought I'd ask the input of the good people here on AT, since you guys always have useful advice to give. I'm also planning on having some salad, but I'm pretty sure a lot of these kids are allergic to anything green. Also I'm not going to have any burgers, only some little hot dogs/buns, so should I have some kind of bread or something? I havn't been to a BBQ in a looong time... thanks guys.

By the way, this has nothing to do with my other thread.

A BBQ w/ about 13 guests who are about 17-18 means you need to spend as much as you possibly can or are willing to afford IMO

Most of them don't eat any more than your average adult, believe me. The girls among them even less.

If we're talking burgers or sausages just figure two per person. Leftovers won't kill you.

Make it a taco salad and you'll get some takers. Throw in some beans, sweeten it up with brown sugar, mustard, and onions.

Chips with dip and veggies with dip can kinda round it out.

If it was family I'd say to work some veggie dishes in there.

Watermellon makes for an easy desert.

If you have access to a Costco or something similar to it then you're all set. If you're not that experienced with entertaining a fair number of people then it's a good way to get started so you can get some valuable experience.

Costco offers reasonable to very good prices on very accessible bbq foods like sausages (honey garlic, hot italian, mild italian - very large and one will definitely fill up a normal appetite - 10 bucks for 10-12 count), party size Caesar salads complete with croutons and dressing (very good and very well priced - really, better than what one could do for themselves unless you're some kind of chef), garlic breads, salads (potato, pasta etc) chips and dips like hummus, tzatziki etc, ready to grill souvlaki skewers and ribs ... and basic ingredients like chicken and the like.

It's fairly simple:

- appies (chips and salsa is cheap and filling - if you're worried about spending too much you can pre-fill your guests with chips and dip)

- support dishes like salads

- mains like meat, fish

- desert like watermelon, ice cream

- drinks like coffee, tea, beer, mixed drinks, whatever.

Get your stereo going to get the mood right and your friends will have a great time. Good luck.

Ask some people to bring something

One person: chips and salsa
one person: salads
watermelon
drinks
something else

just split it up, maybe a 2 liter each for 3 people
2 or 3 people could bring salads, etc.

i just had a bbq last night, and he had very minimal food, and it was enough:

8 or 9 people, each ate like probably 2 or slices of thinly sliced steak, 2 or 3 hot dogs, 1 or 2 sausages, and probably 4-5 small meatballs. we had, bread and marshemellows at the end too.

Ofcourse we spent most of the time talking, so we weren't there just for the food...

You might be able to get away with a half pound per person since you have girls in the mic. They will eat like birds since they will be with guys.

Might want to throw in some baked beans, slaw or another side though.
