I'm trying to decided if it's worth replacing the water pump on a 92 Cavalier. Any ideas what they cost?

Thanks.

Why are you replacing your water pump?

It usually runs about $60... and since you are using the IntarwebTM since you're on this forum... why not try looking it up on Autozone.com or Pepboys.com?

Water pump for my Mustang was $13 for the part
Pump for the Trans Am was $20 or so for the part.

Each one involved about 1 - 1.5 hrs worth of work, and most of that was scraping off the old gasket. a WP (usually) isn't a terribly hard job.

For a '92 Cavalier? The new pump is prolly worth more than the rest of the car, LOL.

depends. First, this is giong to be hard for u to do urself because your going to have to take the front part of ur engine off to replace it. On my cousins mercedes it costed him 1300 that's with installation and everything. Second, it depends on how many miles u have on it. If you have a lot of miles on it they would need to put a belt on it and that would cost like 150. I know, 1300 on the mercedes but i'm guessing urs will cost around that if not less. The best price that I found over here were i live in 900. Good luck.

1300 for a water pump?! Holy crap. Even for a Mercedes, that's outrageous. And 900 isn't any better. A water pump is a relatively simple job.

Exactly and a belt (Cavalier) is ~$10.

well, i've got a domestic of about the same vintage ('93 Chrysler Concorde) and the water pump was like 30 something bucks and the installation process involved removing the belt and pulley, then replacing the pump itself... about 2 hours (conservative estimate). I would imagine yours would be quite similar and the hardest part of the whole job is getting a socket wrench in there to remove the pulley while keeping it from spinning around while you're loosening the bolts

That's why you leave the belt on while you loosen the bolts . Giving the wrench a little "love tap" with a hammer when it's on the bolt is usually enough to break it free, as long as the belt is holding the pulley in place.

Is the car a 2.2L 4cyl or a 3.1L V6.

The V6 is easier then the 4 banger, but even then the 4cyl is not that hard.

As far as the water pump, advance or autozone should have it brand NEW (not reman) for around $20. Since you are doing the water pump check and/or replace the belt, thermostat, hoses, Rad. cap, and of course the coolant.

But I would say if you pay a mechanic to do it, around $70-100 give or take.

It really depends on the vehicle.

Water pump on an early model ford escort involves taking the timing belt off...

Water pump on an early model quad 4 isnt easy either.

Water pump on 90% of the vehicles out there is relatively simple as you stated.
