$500

I only had to buy the setting. The diamond was passed down from her mother

Rule number 1: Get married on a date that is just about impossible to forget.

Rule number 2: Let her pick out the ring so you can never hear a complaint.

Rule number 3: If you feel like rule number 2 is taking it in the shorts get used to it.

I'm sorry but nothing that small is worth that much money. No matter what your GF/Wife/TV/DeBeers says.

I spent $890 on the first one, which was .5 carat. I upgraded it last year to just over a carat for $2300.

I'd have go get a deal of the year if I even spend one month's salary one something so useless.

I'd probably be spending about 1-2k

Buy used on Craigslist!

Too bad a used ring has the perception of being cheap and fake.

Another option that will require more work. There is a lady here in the office that loves to attend auctions; mostly estate auctions. She purchased a ring that was in a horrible setting but the diamond was very nice for $350. She took it to a jewler and had it set in a very simple setting, it appraised for $10,500.

You do know that that was made up by jewelry companies? Lol...

Exactly. They're smoking crack if they think I'm going to spend well over 20 grand on a damned ring.

I didn't buy into anything. I knew how much I wanted to pay and I spent 7 months researching/searching for a stone. I enjoyed learning all about the diamond industry and how corrupt it is. Why did I buy a diamond knowing all of that? Because I knew it was something my girlfriend at the time wanted and I *wanted* to give her something nice.

Depends on your situation. If you are strapped for cash and can't afford it I agree. If it is something you are able to afford why not?

Of course I do, why do you think I added the "like a good boy?" My point was that the amount I spent happened to be 3 months of salary at the time. Did I do it because DeBeers told me to? No, I did it because I sat down, reviewed my finances and found an amount of money that I could afford. Simple as that.

To all the people who scream "diamonds are worthless!" so is your $30k car after 10-15 years. I spent way less than that on a stone that is beautiful and I get a wife for the rest of my life. Absolutely worth it to me.

Talk her into a nice lab created diamond. Get her a nice platinum band with some side stones but the center stone should be lab created.

Spend $1000 and her ring will look like a $10,000 one. Less insurance too.

I can just picture DeBeers execs... sitting around, laughing and lighting their cigars with wads of 500 Euro bills.

Yes but I at least get to use my car and enjoy it for 10-15 years instead of just look at it.

Seriously, who the fvck came up with the idea of a diamond to "get a girl"??? Most worthless bullshit I have ever heard.

No risk of getting a "blood" diamond and it is much better quality.
