3% Cash Back through FatWallet too. Make my money work for me!

NFS4: I know we are in different camps about this stuff but I would recommend you go look at stones and learn a bit about them before pulling the trigger. An SI stone has visual inclusions.

Check out the pictures of SI stones here. That place is where I eventually bought my stone from. Ignore the cheesy site, they have a ton of cool technology they use.

... and congrats on the future engagement!

Just for kicks I found a stone around your price range at that site: Link

Much better color and it is a Hearts and Arrows diamond meaning it is cut extremely well which results in a larger looking stone and much more brilliance.

3 months salary is subjective. For some people on minimum wage it could be like $2-3k. For others it might be $20-30k. I wouldn't judge someone just because they want to spend a large sum of money on a diamond ring. It's their choice, if they feel they can afford it, let 'em go at it. Helps the economy.

That being said, I haven't bought an engagement ring, but am thinking that when I purchase one it'll be something that she will want. That's the most important thing. I also like the fact that she is petite and is well aware that a huge, overpriced ring wouldn't look very nice on her finger.

On the phone talking with the GF. She wants a simple, plain ring and a not so big diamond. And she stated over and over and over AND OVER that she DOES NOT want me to spend a lot of money.

I love this woman!

I just did a quick run through, I wasn't looking for anything specific as I still am a couple of months from pulling the trigger.

Anyway, check the update image in that link.

If I was you I'd make sure of the color/clarity in person so you know just what those grades mean. Obviously you can't inspect that exact diamond, but you know what I mean.

Again, "a lot of money" is subjective.

I've been on enough ring shopping expeditions with my buddy who is getting married in May to have a general feel for the color, clarity and cuts.

My buddy and I went looking at a local jewelry stores and he and his GF picked out the style ring she wanted, and he then went to BlueNile to purchase the ring.

Mine was $550. He only had to buy the setting because my mother gave me her engagement ring diamond. With the $550 deal, we got the matching wedding band to go with it.

Figured this was the case, that you'd already been around looking.

Yeah I decided to go along with him when he was looking b/c I knew my time was coming soon.

I also found a 10% off coupon to BlueNile by doing a simple Google search:

http://www.couponrobin.com/Bluenile-Coupons.htm

Seems strange to be thinking of 3% FatCash and 10% pff coupons when thinking of an engagement ring, but it's just in my nature to look for the best possible deal no matter what the item is.

Blue Nile is well known; isn't exactly the best deal. They don't even have Super Ideal Cut diamonds, and their prices are inflated.

They are better than a mall jewelry store or department store, and that seems to be the frame of reference people use when reviewing it.

around 1400 for a decent .53 diamond and 200 for a cheap white gold ring. Luckily my wife does not have thick fingers so a half carat looks good on her.

About $4000, picked out the stone and setting. The engagement was a surprise. She then couldn't find a matching band, so she picked out a set and they put the stone in the new band. Came to around $6000 total. She loves it because the 1 carat stone looks huge on her tiny hands

Even if I were to spend $500, I don't think it should matter. My dad spent VERY LITTLE on my mom's ring and they didn't even have a honeymoon. But he did use the money he did have to buy their first house which they moved into right after they got married.

So b/c my dad didn't spend a lot of money on the ring, does his "commitment" mean less?

Are you intentionally being dense or what? Let me paint a picture for you because you are missing my point which does not resemble what you wrote above.

If you make a reasonable amount of money and propose with some cheap as hell ring despite the fact that you can afford a pretty nice one comfortably, what do you think that's going to say to the girl you want to marry?

You can argue all you want that it's a meaningless symbol blah blah blah, but if you show up looking like a cheapskate, it's not going to impress upon someone that you are actually committed to them. I can't speak to your dad's situation but if he was loaded and spent nothing on the engagement ring then I would call him a cheapskate.

I never said you have to spend $13,000 but if you spend a ridiculously low amount then you are missing part of the point of the tradition. Why bother buying a ring at all at that point? Just propose without one. Maybe you can put a wheat thin in the box.

As for the "girl contributes nothing"... go ahead and try to win that battle. Good luck. "will you marry me? yes? Ok, I need you to buy me a new computer then."

Remember that one of the major purposes of the engagement ring is for women to show it off to their female friends. When you hear one woman in a group of women announce that she's gotten engaged, you invariably hear "let's see the ring!" almost immediately. A nice and obviously expensive ring allows the woman to show to her friends that she's managed to get a man who will (it is assumed) be a good provider and/or a man of some wealth. It's an affirmation of her own womanhood.

$750 - $1500.

It's hard to find anything decent looking for less than $750. You can go higher than $1500 if you want, but don't feel obligated too. You can get some nice looking rings for $1500. Value doesn't matter. It just has to look nice (keep her personal tastes in mind, though, of course).

Talk her into a nice lab created diamond. Get her a nice platinum band with some side stones but the center stone should be lab created.

Spend $1000 and her ring will look like a $10,000 one. Less insurance too.

No risk of getting a "blood" diamond and it is much better quality.

"Do you really want to chop off a kid's arm so you can have a $5000 natural diamond?"

ABSOLUTELY!
