NFS4: I know we are in different camps about this stuff but I would recommend you go look at stones and learn a bit about them before pulling the trigger. An SI stone has visual inclusions.
Check out the pictures of SI stones here. That place is where I eventually bought my stone from. Ignore the cheesy site, they have a ton of cool technology they use.
... and congrats on the future engagement!
If I was you I'd make sure of the color/clarity in person so you know just what those grades mean. Obviously you can't inspect that exact diamond, but you know what I mean.Originally posted by: NFS4

On the phone talking with the GF. She wants a simple, plain ring and a not so big diamond. And she stated over and over and over AND OVER that she DOES NOT want me to spend a lot of money.
I love this woman!

I've been on enough ring shopping expeditions with my buddy who is getting married in May to have a general feel for the color, clarity and cuts.
My buddy and I went looking at a local jewelry stores and he and his GF picked out the style ring she wanted, and he then went to BlueNile to purchase the ring.

around 1400 for a decent .53 diamond and 200 for a cheap white gold ring. Luckily my wife does not have thick fingers so a half carat looks good on her.

So the more money you spend, the more you are committed to a person? That's bullsh!t. If I spend $1,000 on a ring and my roommate spends $12,500 on his ring, that doesn't make my commitment any less genuine, serious or real.
Even if I were to spend $500, I don't think it should matter. My dad spent VERY LITTLE on my mom's ring and they didn't even have a honeymoon. But he did use the money he did have to buy their first house which they moved into right after they got married.
So b/c my dad didn't spend a lot of money on the ring, does his "commitment" mean less?

Talk her into a nice lab created diamond. Get her a nice platinum band with some side stones but the center stone should be lab created.
Spend $1000 and her ring will look like a $10,000 one. Less insurance too.
No risk of getting a "blood" diamond and it is much better quality.
