if it were me, i would not just take $88k base. like you said, that's basically a lateral move. they are giving you absolutely 0 incentive to switch positions.

you are coming off as being a bit desperate though, which may have showed through to the company interviewing you, so they may know that you will accept a lowball offer. as mentioned earlier, you have to go in with the mindset that you are the one doing the company a favor for working there, not the other way around. you sound like they are doing you a big favor for making you a lowball offer.

when switching jobs, as long as you aren't just job jumping every few months, you should expect at least a 10% increase in pay. at least at the range you are at, maybe not when you get into the upper 100's though since that 10% can become quite a bit more.

I guess the reason I struggle the most is I can't put a quantitative number on the value of getting out of a trap [job] and moving close to my g/f.

But you're right, if Iwas fairly happy with my job now and I wasn't in a long distance relationship, I would definitely not accept $88k.

One week PTO? How does that even exist in a job that is skilled enough to pay 90k...

I just accepted an offer in NJ where I get 23 days PTO to start, prorated for the rest of the year. So starting June 1st I'll already have over 2x more PTO than what you are listing.

5 days PTO sounds like another trap job to me.

1 week is completely laughable. It should be 3 plus sick time and holidays.

For reference, I get 4 weeks vacation, 10 days sick/other, and 11 holidays.

Answer to this question depends if you have a job currently or not.

Also, they low balled you IMO, I would accept and recognize what kind of people you are dealing with here (assuming you have a job). Same deal for time off.....that's extremely low.....

I would keep looking....

I will consult the Googlez as well, but I want ATOTers personal experience. I was given a job offer recently and it is lower than I asked - by quite a bit. How much is a respectable amount % wise to ask higher?

For what it's worth, they told me they would give me an end of year bonus to make up for lack of base salary, but for years 2+ that money would not be guaranteed.

Leaving out actual salary here because it's just not going to impress you baller ATOT playboy millionaires.

Look for another offer from a different company.

If a company offers lower than you asked, and you have to twist their arms to meet it, do not expect a raise for a very long term. Also a bonus is not guaranteed.

I did not know ATOT had playboy millionaires?

So, I asked for:
1) $88k base salary, up from $83k
2) Guaranteed bonus on year one same as before
3) 8 vacation days up from 5

He also told me they get the entire week of Xmas off, so technically I get an additional 6 days of vacation for free. They also agreed to give me $500 toward moving costs.

I start May 9. Unfortunately I will be much less active on here because this job will be more demanding. Thank you all!!

How quickly did they accept your counter? Sounds like you could have just stuck with your original $95K and they would have accepted. But congrats either way!

The next day he called me and said he would accept all my counters. Perhaps I could have gotten more, but I felt like @ 88k with the 7k guaranteed bonus, I'd be content.

I'm very excited to start my new job!

Sounds good, congrats!

What kind of IT work is it?

It's not IT, it's electrical engineering work. I'll be sort of a jack of all trades, being the liaison between customers and the uber nerdy design engineers. I'd also get sent to do high profile field work at Navy yards, provide quotes, manage contracts, etc. This is a very small company, so people end up needing to develop more than one skill set.

Sorry for not reading all of the responses, but here is my take.

1) A salary goal should be part of the job search process. I don't look for jobs that pay less....unless there is some other intangible benefit that will make up for the difference. In my business (sales), that's quota, territory or boss.
2) If you are taking less than you are making now, then that's what you are accepting as your worth. Everything else is pillow talk.
3) a promise of a bonus means nothing...absolutely nothing. In my career i have "literally" more an $1M in promises sitting in the bank of "trust me i'll get it done" that I can't withdraw. If they are serious about the bonus, then put it in writing and make it tangible and achievable. (for me it would have to be a certainty)
4) To answer the question about counter offer...I don't think it matters. if they say they'll give you $10/hr and you say I need $20/hr. That's just a negotiating point. They shouldn't hold it against you unless you are asking for something ridiculous or you're a woman. Eventually you will figure out this..."what CAN they pay you."

In small companies that "what can they pay you" question is loose. The owner CAN pay you anything he likes. In that case, you should ask for the market rate plus your added value. If it's a larger company (with an HR dept etc), they will likely have salary bands that they just can't exceed regardless of who you are. you can ask...but HR will decide.

Keep in mind , there are more important things in life than money . Your happiness and well being are two things that come to mind . Work hard , good things will happen .

not a chance in hell i would ever work somewhere that i get 8 days of vacation off a year. i wouldn't even be able to take my trip to europe this summer without working there more than a year to accumulate 10 days.

plus that extra $5k after taxes is only like an extra $150/check after taxes.

i personally definitely would have passed without question.

I'd say it's pretty typical in the US to have that much vacation. At my company we only have ten days paid vacation with a bank of 1.5x for your first five years. After five years, you go up to 15 days. This is on top of 11 paid holidays. When I looked around that seemed fairly typical for most large companies.

My benefit is that I can work from home, or remotely in most cases, so I usually throw a day or two of work in with a vacation to spread it out or help with travel time.

or i'm valuable so i don't have to settle so i can pick and choose a good company to work for.

i get 27 days of PTO a year right now. i wouldn't ever take a job where i got less than 4 weeks at this point in my career.
