How much interference from 2.4ghz phone?

I need to move my office to my basement so I figured I'd treat myself to a wireless network (just ordered orinoco barracade, and 3 orinoco gold pci cards from gateway). I also wanted to get a 2-line 2.4ghz mobil phone and 3 base stations so I don't have to try and run a telephone line down to the basement. Do you guys with both a 802.11b network and 2.4 ghz phones around your house notice any signal degredation in either the phone units or the network transfer speed? I also have a nextel phone/radio on my hip all the time and that thing will mess up even a wired phone line if a call comes in while I'm on the phone and the computer monitor will pick up a little noise if the phone is on my desk next to the monitor and it rings. It's got me a bit worried about the radiation going into my head when I talk on the thing. (Seriosly, those nextel phones are powerful! much moreso than a regular cell phone).

But anyway, do you guys pick up interference from your 2.4 ghz phones or nextel radio phones? Thanks!

I am by far an electrical engineer (okay I'm a computer systems engineer). My guess is that the really smart people that set-up standards and allocate frequency ranges keep things in check. HOWEVER, noise & interference does happen and the answer is yes it could. But I wouldn't worry about anything until you start singing songs and then turn on the radio with the same song playing in the exact place you were singing at.

Sorry I can't say yea or nay becuase I honestly don't have a 2.4 Ghz cordless with 3 base stations along with a Nextel 2-way radio/digital phone, etc with a wireless LAN.

oh my gosh I just had a thought.. you aren't thinking about putting a microwave down there are you? ....

People have had both experiences with 2.4 phone intereference. I have encountered cases where the connection has cut off when the phone rings. And in other setups, the phone just gets static and wireless performance is poorer. Somethings messing with the channels on your router, if it will let you, can help. You can be certain unless you try it out. Hope this helps.

The 2.4 phones I have looked at are frequency hopping, which does what the name implies. The data bounces around the band. 802.11b are direct sequence, using a set frequency. 2.4 phones can, and often do cause problems. Really depends on where your devices are located and if the phone signal is loud enough to cause interference. Simple answer is that it's situational. You may be fine, but be aware that you may have to ditch your phones, or just buy an 802.11a product. (5.15-5.35 Ghz devices)

ROFL - Now I'm thinking hard...I think that has happened to me before!! I guess I may not be psychic after all, just a bit too much RF waves hitting my skull.

by the way..any advice on removing the sheilding on the microwave door? It's hard to pop popcorn just right with an obstructed view. LOL.

I have a 2.4 ghz in my home and it completely destroys (as in cuts off 100%) the connection between my barricade wireless and my orinoco wireless card on my laptop. I would not recommend using the combination in your home.

I have a linksys wap11 and orinoco silver cards with a panasonic 2.4 ghz phone sitting right next to it. No troubles at all. I'm pretty sure that the designers took into account that people would have 2.4 ghz phones, but you never know.

Aye Aye Aye! Now I'm worried cause the orinoco gold cards arrived today thad the barricade should come tomorrow. Looks like I'll have the same setup. What phone do you have, does it use signal hopping? I'm not sure how signal hopping works but if it is a feature designed for increased reception I imagine it would seek out the clearest, strongest frequency band. But if it's designed primarily for security it may just jump around at random all along 2.4ghz which could be desasterous for anything else trying to share that frequency. Also, how old is your phone and your wireless card? Maybe there have been some improvements as it seems some people have no problem.

I haven't ordered the phone system yet but had my eye on a nice one and it would really be nice to have a bunch of wireless phones that can double as intercome/room monitor. I have my 4 year old at home with me as I work from home and it would be nice to be able to keep an eye/ear on her if she goes to other areas of the house. Or at least be able to page her or my 13 year old when I want them.

Actually I just checked my order and the router/gateway I ordered was the orinoco RG-1100 gateway. Not sure if this is the same as the orinoco barrade or not. Hey, I'm new to networking!

From Practically Networked

"HomeRF is also pretty much unaffected by microwave oven and 2.4GHz cordless phone operation, where 802.11b networks can be slowed when you decide to heat up a burrito and temporarily shut down if you want to talk on your 2.4GHz phone."

-- you thought I was kidding about the microwave!

Yeah, that's true. HomeRF 1.0 and 2.0 use Frequency hopping. Dances all around the 2.4 Ghz ISM. Thus, no interference.

I'm not sure the specs on the phone. Its a panasonic 2.4ghz. And I use it to talk through to other people far away.

I'm not a phone guy.
