Divide 170 into 1000 (1KW) ~5.88 / KW/h rate X hours of usage per month.

So average use how much would that be?

Assuming that you paid about 20 cents per KW/h and left it on continuously, it would come out to about $24.49 per month.

How do you get 170 watts extra on a computer 24/7? How do you get $0.20/kWh?

I see $0.103/kWh here:

http://webapps6.we-energies.com/appliancecalc/appl_calc.cfm

Assuming 100% usage over 30 days, I get:

170/1000 * 720 * 100% * $0.103 = $12.61

Assuming 8hrs / day usage, this is:

$12.61 * 8/24 = $4.20

You can also use a couple of lightbulbs in the linked calculator to estimate 170W additional usage.

Longshot guess..........

Just because you got a bigger power supply thats rated 170watts more than your old one, does not mean you will be using 170 watts more of power.

IMO, The efficiency of your PSU figures into the equation.

Say a 70% to 88% comparison. A higher efficiency may have a better effect towards saving on electrical usage.

Threads like this make me love the fact that I spend $30 on a Seasonic Power Angel. Great little thing to have for stuff like this.

Hold on, just because your PSU is capable of a zillion watts does not mean that it will draw that much power all the while. It will only draw as much power at 110volts as your computer sucks in. The current CPU's and video card are also pretty smart with power consumption.

Unless your computer is on all the time and participating in online research all the time, you should not see a hit of over 10 dollars.

Correct, I have a 550 seasonic and I used one of those killa watt measurement

1 x2 3800
1 pci video card 6600
3 optical
3 hdd

it drew around 220 watt booting into windows...

of course using each device might increase it slightly or something..

Threads like this make me thankful I live in a Kentucky Utilities service area and pay less than 6 cents per KWH after taxes. 1075KWH(all electric home) cost me $64 and that's a high usage midsummer bill. I understand we have the lowest electric rates in the country.

Here on Maui, we pay $101.56 for 334 WWH, so leaving my rigs on 24/7 is not an option that I would favor.

Or conversely, when settling down to idle or basic use, power useage will be significantly less, especially if any of the ODDs had spun up, the HDDs sport APM and/or are configured to power down, and the GPU & CPU step down. Also, lest we forget the significance of the display power useage which is seperate from these figures but can likewise draw minimal power by sleeping while the PC carries on doing schtuff without user interaction.

USA average is less than $0.10 kWh and it's only that high because Hawaii, California, Alaska and the Northeast pull it up, as 'twere, for obvious reasons. So, there's a good chance you're paying less but as said your bill will answer that.

That is terrible. I use 3 times the energy for one third the price. Living in Minnesota with those rates I hope you don't have electric heat. The highest bill I had last winter was $110 and my electric heat is resistive which is not too efficient. As a former President once said "I feel your pain"
