The ceiling light fixture in my dining room is wonky. When I put a light bulb in it, the fixture fizzles for a bit and the bulb goes out.

Not something I can fix myself - so, how much will someone charge me to fix this?

Thanks gang.

You could just turn off the breaker, check the connection between the romex and the fixture wiring. Chances are you just need to fix the connection at that point.

Well, no way to know until someone looks at to see what's wrong. Probably just needs a new fixture, but it could be a wiring problem.

Call a few to see what they charge for a visit. Some will come quote it out for free. Some will charge you just to come to the house.

It'll cost more than it's worth(imo). If I were closer, I'd fix it for you. Your best bet is finding a friend, or someone you can coerce into fixing it if you can't do it yourself.

It's also possible that the connector in the bottom of the socket just needs to be pulled out a bit. Obviously turn off the breaker first.

anywhere between 30 - 100 dollars. Depends on the type of company you call. But its just a 5 min fix! But hey! keep the ball rolling, spread the bough around... good for everyone.

This is an easy diy. Follow the wiring pattern when you take it off and install the new fixture the same pattern as the old one. Wires like white to white and black to black. Thats it. Saved you $100

This is a job for a handyman, and its such a small job I would look around your home for a few more "small" jobs, wonky electrical outlets etc.

You "might" need a new fixture, or it might be possible to replace just the socket, or if the metal contacts in the socket are dirty or slightly bent away from making good contact with the bulb just to clean them slightly bend them back. Cheap socket syndrome.

Make friends with someone who can do this kind of stuff, or get a good reference for a handyman and use him for all the small repairs.

Generally you only need a real electrician for serious repairs and installing new wiring, not making repairs to existing stuff.

Handyman typically half to third cost of Electrician or plumber, but about 10% of the skill and training.

As soon as they have technology that allows someone to punch someone else in the face over the Internet, you and I are going to have a talk.

Even if he's right? It's not uncommon for a mechanic/electrician/etc. to take advantage of a person't lack of knowledge...especially women since things like auto repairs/home repairs are usually outside their scope of knowledge...

"Sorry lady. You have a blown breaker in your fuse panel. I'll have to change the circuit breaker, pull in some new wiring for that half of your house, and unless you get very lucky, (I won't know until I break look at it) I'll probably have to install a new bifurcating swivel widget. I can estimate...but it's only an estimate until I get into things...this will run you about $3000 to $4500."

Of course, just resetting the breaker would do the trick for free...

Nanette, changing the light fixture is pretty simple work...and doesn't require an electrician. Youtube will have lots of DIY videos.

one time my mothers toilet got plugged up and she called a plumber and he sold her an $800 pressure blast of the 6 inch pipes underneath her house. i would never trust these fugs to not cheat a vulnerable person

Do you use dating websites?

Turn ons: a man who is handy.

You'll have it fixed before you have to sleep with him more than 3 times I would bet.
