Does anyone know of any future game releases which might be too much for the 3870? With my spare PC I usually game at 1280x1024 because the monitor isn't great and the CPU is AMD Athlon64 X2 4800 2.4Ghz which chugs along nicely

Up your resolution and you will start to see the limitations. At your current resolution, however, you should be sitting fine for a while.

My 8800gt is still running strong for me. Haven't had too many games give it many problems, except for Arma 2, but that game gives almost every video card problems.

Unfortunately my monitor is not very clear at say 1600x1200 which is why I use 1280x1024. It's good to know that at 1280 the 3870 should be ok for a bit longer yet.

I will have to remember that because the 3870 is about 8800 GT level.

The practicality of abusing my 9600XT since '03 expired a long time ago.

I was able to play Company of Heroes a couple summers ago. And America's Army.

hey dude.. i mean OP... just keep the 3870... as long as it runs fine it will be fine... now when you start noticing new games really put the card into waste then change it...

take it this way... if tomorrow there is a nuclear war or something like that and ATI nvidia, and game developers, and amd, intel get wasted in the way... a 3870, or whatever card that survives is going to be good to go for at least a 100 years lol...

Somehow, I think if large chunks of the world got blown away in a nuclear war, playing Crysis and other games at max settings is one of your lesser worries.

A game that might stress a 3870 would be World in Conflict. I recently upgraded to a HD4650 (not that strong I know), but WIC seems to really stress my card. I have to run medium setting and low resolutions. If you like strategy games it is worth giving that game a try.

I've been playing Unreal Tournament 3 (with max settings) for days now between work.

Will have to find something abit more demanding for my HIS 3870.

Still running an 8800gt here. I was thinking of upgrading to the new ATI cards this fall, but now I think I won't even bother unless a game comes out that really makes me want to upgrade. I don't even mind turning down the settings a bit.

Depends on the game but usually they offer very similar performance. The 3870 and 9600 GT will offer good gaming performance but both might require you to reduce resolution etc.

I haven't had to reduce resolution in anything but Crysis/Warhead.

Pretty much every game I throw at this thing, I can run in max settings @ 1680x1050. Except for AA. I never use AA.

GRID and Assassins Creed also run great at max everything.

Crysis and Crysis Warhead are about the only games I have to turn down settings on.

How much longer will I be able to max out games? What'll be the first game that comes out after Warhead that my 3870 will struggle with?

Questions I don't have the answer to.

Relevent specs: Intel C2D 2.8, 4gb DDR2-800, 20" 1680x1050 LCD

You just answered your own question...you'll be fine, since Crysis isn't actually a game, just a poorly coded tech demo.

I have a comparable 8800GT, and I run settings and gear similar to yours, and it's done well with everything I've played on it.

Oh, and AA is a joke...it kills your performance for a negligible (if any) graphical difference. I usually run 2x AA or none.
