How much money do you make?

Someone old told me it's rude to ask a person how much their salary is or how much money they have in the piggy bank. She told me it's bad etiquette. I begged to differ.

I've no income, currently. I've got no problems telling people I've only $50 in my piggy bank. My friends on the other hand simply tell me they don't have much. What the hell is that? I asked for a figure and that's the reply I get.

Why are these people so defensive? The only obvious reason I see is they don't want me to know how fatter their piggy bank is than mine.

It could be that, or maybe its because it is absolutely none of your damn business.

BTW, I've gat an assload more than $50

not enough

seriously though, we're supposed to see beyond such things as class, and meet the individual. and in the office it can create jealousy and such.

uhhh.. do you want to know how much we make or why other people don't want to tell you?

I personally have never had an issue with this, and will tell anyone that asks. My friends would certainly tell me if I asked them, but I really don't care.

Not really sure why(/if) it's considered bad manners to ask. In the workplace it can create obvious problems, but outside of that.. who cares?

sane people don't care, but most people aren't sane

if people in your office who do the same basic job find out you make alot more, they get pissed.

that being said: i make 58K a year plus all benefits and also stock options as a PostgreSQL DBA at an online email/collaboration company

meh. it's just bad etiquette... sorta like asking a person how much they weigh or a woman how old she is.

It's probably impolite. You're asking a personal question and it's obvious that people will get defensive sometimes. Kinda like asking, "So, how big isyour penis?" Does it matter? Why are you asking?

It might offend some, it might not. Meh...

I do get offended when people ask. It's really none of their business.

My wife's friend asked how much I made once, before I told my wife not to ever tell anybody. What do you know, 3 weeks later she calls up asking for money.

I only tell my close family and a few select friends, everybody else can butt out.

sometimes I feel like it's been made taboo by employers. if nobody at a company knows what the person next to them is getting paid, the boss can get away with paying some people much less.

There's only one thing more heinous, more taboo, more EVIL than asking somebody how much money they make: asking a woman how old she is.

Yeah, after that I asked my wife not to tell anybody anymore. I think I only have 2 friends that know and they are my closest, both make about as much or more than I do. Only my brother and my parents know and my mother in law. Otherwise, nobody else.

People get all weird about money if you make more (or less) than they do. I'd rather avoid all of that.

I'm always amazed when in a social situation with people, especially people I've just met, who will bring up how much I make or how much I paid for my house.

My theory is that I dont give a damn about how much they make or how much they paid, and therefore they have no business knowing about me.

If someone is asking for a legitimate reason, like they're interested in buying a house in my neighborhood, then sure. But just out of curiousity... piss off.
