how much of a difference is there?

between running an OS (win2k, win98) on a ata/66 5400 rpm hard drive and a ata/66 7200 hard drive? also, how big of a difference would there be when running ata/100 5400 and ata/100 7200? would the differences be huge or minimal?

You can notice the difference between 7200rpm and 5400rpm drives easily, I would never buy a 5400rpm drive now that I've used a 7200rpm. But then again that's just me, some may not be so bothered about it. About ATA66/100 ... I doubt there is an actual difference between the two with todays HDs.

you should certainly notice a quicker boot up time with the 7200 rpm drive!

You should have a noticeable improvement with the 7200RPM drive since it'll boot things faster, and your virtual memory will be faster as well as opposed to a lower RPM drive.

My computer is a PIII-800 with a 5400rpm drive, and my brothers is a K7-700 with a 7200
both are using ATA/66 and his computer boots in half the time mine does

5400 RPMS are probably suited for file storage these days. Keep the OSes and programs on 7200+.
