I recall the UK isn't very open on a Sunday, so pick a different day if you can. I would put my stuff in a locker at the airport, stay out as late as possible in London, then back to the airport and doze on a bench with a sign on me showing flight time so I don't get bothered.

Late lunch here (cafe, not dining room) due to great ice cream.
Fortnum & Mason

St. James's, London W1A 1ER
United Kingdom

Then pick something late night, movie, play, bar, whatever, then pick something to do in the middle.

I was there for three weeks and barely scratched the surface of London. Don't be fooled in thinking you can get a lot in.

Saved our arse?

What like, turning up right at the end because the Japanese dragged you into the war kicking and screaming like a petulant child?

Please.

wait i changed my mind.

here's what you should see of London .. the very best!

1. Brixton (home of the brixton riots), 2. Peckham, 3. Seven Sisters, 4. Tottenam Hale, 5. Wood Green, 6. Plaistow (jewel of East London, really), 7. Thorthon Heath.

Why spend time in Westminster when you can experience the smells of brixton, the "plague of the chicken shop" of peckham, the ghetto market stall of seven sisters, and why not get stabbed in tottenham or thorthon heat.

Right at the end? Pretty sure you guys were only really fighting for about 2.5 years before we joined the 6 year fight*. That is not even remotely close to 'right at the end'. Not to say we should go around saying we saved your ass but your math is a bit off

*Unless you count Japan vs China but that doesn't really involve the UK before '41

Now that's a party.

(Don't go to any of those places)

Only 2.5 years longer?

2.5 years is a pretty long time during a *world war* for the American general public and government to oppose getting involved.

You were dragged into it after the japanese bombed pearl harbour in December 1941, at which point you didn't really have a choice but to get involved.

Still, thanks for the help, when it came, we were already pretty fucking knackered by that point.

US was involved in military operations in 42--Africa and the Pacific. DDay wasn't until 44...close to "the end." We were fighting along 2 fronts.

You must be confusing WWII with WWI.

anyway, he was making a joke. go have a warm pint and punch a rival soccer fan.

Just an update now: we could never make that trip to London at that time (because of a death in the family).

But now we can, this June (three weeks away), and we are prepared - our flight reaches LHR 7am on a Tuesday morning and the connecting flight is at 9.30pm, Wed night. That gives us two full days to tour London, more time than I estimated earlier. I see I can reserve at the Shard for the first evening, so we could watch the sunset from there. I am also liking a Bed & Breakfast close to the Royal Albert Hall - close enough to walk to stuff, and yet not too expensive.

I am thinking maybe a museum etc during the regular day hours, and then outdoor sight seeing later.

Thanks to all the input in this thread, I feel I'm so ready!

My girls loved that piece by Anthony Bourdain and now want to trace his steps ! I'll be happy if I can just get into a bar or two...

If you do go to a museum, go to the British Museum! I spend a month a year near London and that one is by far my favorite. It has countless antiquities in it, including the Rosetta stone and the Parthenon (yes, the Parthenon). It's free and you can get in and out quickly, but I guess it's not that close to the other main attractions. None of the other museums are really that unique compared to what you can find in the British Museum.

I think it's better to spend most of your time walking around at first, then decide what you actually want to see closer. Personally I think going up the Shard is a waste of precious time (I've done that and St. Paul's dome). Everything is way cooler up close.

Yorkshire pudding is just a crappy batter-based bread roll that soaks up gravy for Sunday roasts. Sticky toffee pudding is practically the national dessert and is amazing.

That much of recommendation is good for me, Charlie! British Museum it is - and free is best!

So Sticky Toffee pudding, eh? We love anything new to taste, so look forward to that.
