How much of your pc's speed do you really use?

Seems like most people's PC's are just sitting there twiddling their thumbs unless they are being used for games. I mean, some people run SETI or RC5, but that doesn't really count since they are not productive usage.

Me, I have my utilization pegged at 100% 24 hours a day from "backing up" my DVD's, burning CD's, recording multitrack audio, etc, etc. If I upgraded to super-fast dual machine, I'd just peg that at 100%, too.

How about you guys?

Wow, and this whole time I thought RC5 was productive. Thanks for the clarification.

seti@home while playing games, ripping dvd to divx, ripping cds to ogg...you get the picture...seti is just as productive as playing games, to me it is a game and thats why i have fun using it. i set my eye on someone ahead of me and try to catch them. so to answer your question, i use 100% of my cpu 100% of the time. =]

I probabaly stay at <5% most of the time.

But then, why should I actually try to use my system to it's max all the time?
I only need that powerful CPU etc for a few tasks, such as compiling some stuff, or playing games, but thats what I buy it for.

Do you keep your car at 100% all the time too?

RC5 100% of the time. It's productive...it just shows how strong encryption is.

LOL, I'm at 100% all the time, but since that is from SETI@Home, I guess it doesn't count.

I use all of it if I'm playing games and usually less than 10% if I'm surfing the web and playing CDs/MP3s with Windows Media player.

You want a cookie or something?

Is your soundcard playing an mp3 all the time? Is your videocard rendering things at 100% capacity all the time? Is your modem in usage all the time? Are you playing your games all the time? What about your utilities?

Personally, mine is only at 100% full utilization maybe 5% of the time, other periods it's just sitting here checking emails every few mins and running some sort of IM. No, i don't need my computer running at 100% all the time, but every once in awhile, when i do need it to, i like knowing the fact that i have a decent CPU so that i don't get frustrated.

Jesus, what's your guys' problem? If you think my post was so stupid, why'd you bump it up with your reply?

I wasn't saying that if you don't max your potential you're dumb or something. I was just curious. I wasn't looking for flaming from Diamond members who should know better. How was my post any dumber than the "What's better, AMD or Intel?" posts?

Get a life!

As for productivity, I guess I just meant doing work on your computer. I guess I was thinking that since SETI, RC5, etc. aren't really something you are actively doing, it didn't count. I mean, I run SETI too, it just never gets any cycles. I don't sit there and watch it go and wait with anticipation of a complete unit. So I guess that's why I said it doesn't count. If you bought your computer so you can show it off with RC5, then for you it would count.

100%... i run distributed computing stuff. About 5-7 of them and i have them on a rotating schedule. i run RC5 and SETI for TA and the rest (UD, F@H, G@H, etc.) for . I would join TA if they had a team in F@H, G@H, etc.

I hope you don't mean playing games is productive...cause I think that is a waste...IMO

I use my computer for rendering my designs in 3d in cadd, along with my cadd work for my work...I make tons of divx movies as well as download and edit my dv camcorder movies...I encode mp3s...scan pictures and photo edit them.../

I may not use the system full board for the majority of the time, but like guy above I pay for the ability to in a burst aof speed get whatever task I am planning on doing done as fast as possible...

Just out of curiosity, why backup DVD movies to DivX?

Its not like watching a DivX movie on your comp is comparable in any way to watching a DVD on your TV.

And it's not like you're gonna be able to burn it back as a real DVD in case your original disc should fail.

Not flaming or anything, I just dont see the point.

Ya, DivX is a joke. The quality isn't that great (except for high bitrates which take 3 or 4 CDs). I archive all the DVDs I purchase to Super VideoCD -- that way I don't have to worry about one getting scratched and becoming unusuable. The quality is very, very comparable to the original DVD. And I don't have to sit in front of a PC to watch a film.

OK, you guys who are going on about the faults of Divx, you did note that he put "backing up" in quotes, right? I'm of the impression that this is of the "wink wink, nudge nudge" variety of backup. More on topic, I peg my ThinkPad out maybe 5-10% of the time. I don't generally need all 850MHz, but it's nice to have them.

EDIT: thomsbrain, step into OT and we'll have a nice little discussion about the failures of logic inherent in your sig, OK?

P3 600MHz with 256MB RAM is just fine!
I might need more than 6GB for my HD sometime but for now .... burner, burner do thy thing!

Oh, and since its a laptop I don't want it to use 100% CPU time (conserves energy)

coolVariable, that's a very good point, I didn't think about it in terms of laptop battery time. On a laptop, you'd want to use as little as possible.

Zenmervolt, I really don't think there is anything to discuss regarding my signature. You might like Bush or not, but I'm pointing out a little pattern I'd like everyone to notice. If you're not seeing the pattern, perhaps I should change it to "Oil War." Cause if you think Operation Enduring Freedom has anything to do with freedom, you've got rocks in your head. Unless you mean freedom for oil companies to run pipelines through Afganastan. But that's not really the subject of this thread. BTW, I'm glad you got the "backing up" thing. Seems like you were the only one.

EDIT: in responce to those who think this thread is stupid: yes, this thread isn't super great, but it's better than the "which detonator drivers will give me the highest FPS in quake 3 on my GTS? cause 200 FPS isn't high enough for me..." threads.
