The Dell 4600 was a nice machine, far better than the silly new 4700! :|
i865 chipset. Yep. Dual channel is a very good thing. Check inside your machine to see if your existing ram is 1x256 or 2x128 (which I suspect.)

If you fill all your RAM slots by adding 2x256MB you won't have room to grow.

If you have one stick in there, get a second 256MB module to make a pair.
If there's two, I'd recommend either 2x256 or 2x512 depending on your finances. 2x256 would give you that 768MB total and probably perfect for your needs.

I wouldn't order from newegg. Dells are very picky about their memory and there is a good chance stuff from newegg won't work. Go to www.crucial.com and find memory for the 4600. It's guaranteed to work and comes with a lifetime warranty. You also want to be sure to get two sticks so you can keep it in dual channel mode. If you make your machine run in single channel mode, it almost defeats the purpose of upgrading the memory in the first place.

Another stupid question...Crucial allows me to pick either PC2700 or PC3200

Right now I have PC2700. Does that mean PC3200 won't work? Or will it work if I were to remove the PC2700? Or what?

I only just recently installed a pair of generic DDR400 modules in a Dell 4600. It's NOT that fussy!
(All the same, it sure doesn't hurt to buy your RAM from a local store that will exchange for a different type for free if you need to.)
Go for it. 2x256MB on budget, 2x512MB if you can afford it. You won't be sorry!

The PC3200 ram will run at PC2700 speeds is all.

Edit: ^ That's only if you're running the PC2700 stuff at the same time, or your mobo only supports PC2700 speeds.
