How much raw processing power do you think this thing has?

neat. its more a feat of adaptive programing then raw processing power i think though.

It is mostly software, but I'm sure it has more than the average high-end desktop in terms of processing. It reacts very quickly.

Seriously though, I'm extremely impressed with the programming. I wonder how they did it? Neural networks? Or maybe just a kickass physics engine?

Sweet, it sure isn't going to sneak up on anyone under its own power though! What is that buzzing, a generator or something?

engines i believe.

That is simply amazing when it was on the ice and it never touched the ground. It reacted kind of like a human where your feet go all over the place to try and stabilize yourself.

But yea most the of the physics and raw power is in the programming. Since motors are obviously advanced enough for high speeds so its just the software that needs to control everything at a certain rate. Still amazing though since a split second of time wasted in a calculation where the guy kicks it and its on the ground.

i love how they used a biologically relevant joint model for limbs. thing is wicked freaky.
do you think the robot itself is doing the majority of calculations or do you think they are transmitted? seems to me that you could offload a lot of the computing power over a frequency. the sound is hella menacing. i'd run for life if i saw that thing in the woods.

The thing is running on a generator. I think it has plenty of power for local computation.

Although the computations seem intense, the computer in this machine is tailored for one purpose. Think about how much power a $40,000 + physics controller will give you.

I remember seeing this a while ago, but it didn't include footage of the snow and ice.

Watching it recover on the ice patch is nothing short of breathtaking.

Seriously - that was absolutely amazing considering it's load. I think a lot is owed to the above mentioned design of the legs.

That thing always looked creepy to me. It's like you took two neurotics in black pants, made them face each other, and then replaced their entire upper torso with this big metal thing. Add to that the insane buzzing of the generator, and the effect is disturbing.

Quite mobile, though...this is about as close as I've seen a robot come to biological manueverability and adaptability. I'm surprised they didn't go for a "stiff-legged" approach for ice walking...this is an area where a machine with legs could actually do better than a biological.

Very impressive, and just about the most creepy thing I've seen in my entire life.
Probably just running some Freescale PPC processor or something similar.
