How much should a clutch and flywheel for a car cost?

I have a 2003 Tiburon GT V6 6-spd manual transmission with less than 60K on it, and started having trouble shifting the gear. Took it to a mechanic shop, and they said it would be $350 for a new slave and master cylinder. The following week, they call me back and say that that didn't fix it and that I would need a new clutch and the new estimate was $1100. I give the go ahead and two days later they call me back and said the flywheel was bad which had worn out the clutch prematurely. Estimate re-adjusted to $2250. They said they weren't charging extra labor, but that the flywheel was expensive.

Does that seem like the right cost for a new clutch and flywheel?

I've been thinking of just taking the car to a different shop. But I'm afraid that I'll have to pay them the $1100 and then pay somebody else even more to finish the job.

Their labor rates must be... uh... through the roof?

If I were you, I'd never go back there. $1100 for a clutch + install? Good God.

most clutch+ resurface flywheels run $300-600 maybe even $800 at the dealership.

This is what it normally boils down to.
$150 clutch/resurfacing.
$500 labor 5 hours @ $100 per hour.

How much is this flywheel costing? If anything i'll get a aftermarket lightweight flywheel for $500 rather then an OEM one.

Something like this...

with the trans off the car your car is not mobile right now. I would ask them to source you a cheaper flywheel. for you to take your car and go somewhere else, you would need a tow truck, and then pay them maybe 1/2 of that $1100, since the $1100 is for remove and install, they did the remove part.

$2250 is an INSANE price for a clutch job, thats like a engine swap.

I just googled your clutch. If they are using the original type dual-mass flywheel then the replacement one I found was $955 for the flywheel alone. There is a conversion kit that comes with a different style of flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing for about $500. Parts are expensive for your little Hyundai, I suggest you learn how to drive stick properly to prevent a reapeat.

Yikes. I've heard that parts cost on some Korean cars was loony, but this takes the biscut.

The replacement for the Tiburon (which Hyundai claims is NOT a replacement...but whatever), the Genesis, seems to use a lot of off-the-shelf parts - the gearboxes are ZF, like you find in quite a lot of GM products, and the smaller turbocharged engine is more or less the same in the Chrysler SRT-4 and Mitsubishi Evo-X, albeit with some corners cut. It stands to reason that they did the same with the clutch.

It may not be entirely him, the older Elantras had real issues with burning out clutches early due to crap parts. It wouldn't surprise me if the same stuff was used in the Tiburon .

Yep, dual mass flywheels are flippin' expensive. The one for my Legacy is also about $1000. Needless to say, it will be replaced with a conventional lightweight flywheel.

Also, you can't resurface a dual mass because there's no way to secure the wear surface.

The shop said that they couldn't return the parts they had already put in, so using a conversion kit would still end up costing me about $1980. So, I just asked them to use the dual mass one which will come out to be $2250. Oh well. I hope this one lasts.

You can get WAAAAY better prices for better parts than the dealership can offer.

I can get a clutch assembly for my 05 Mustang GT for $450 that is capable of holding 650hp all day (Canadian dollars). Flywheel is probably around the same price for a lightweight. Another $400 for install.
