How much to charge gf's grandmother...

My GF's grandmother is having me install some speakers in her home which is prewired for surround sound. I tried to insist that I do it for free, but she insisted that she pay me. I literally am just mounting the speakers to the wall, running a few wires to the wall plugs, then continuing through a subwoofer and back to the receiver. I will probably do a bit of calibration with her there.

Looking around I see places charging upwards of $150, which I can't even fathom charging.

Has anyone done an install similar? She's paying for my gas and taking us out to dinner also as we're driving ~ 1 hour from home.

Tell her $75, gas included. You're charging her half of what she would pay someone else and it is high enough that she probably won't argue.

Better yet, tell her that you'd like her to do dinner (cooked or dining out) for you and your g/f. That way, you earn points with both your g/f and her grandmother, and get to know grandma better (maybe even make it into the will!! :laugh: ).

She has the money. She insisted on small bose-like speakers that blend in well with the wall and said "cost doesn't really matter."

On a side note, she just paid for her entire family (20+ relatives) to spend 1 1/2 weeks at a lake in Central/Northern MI. Most of her offspring live in CA.

And believe me, I've tried to say that dinner would be enough (My gf is coming along). We went out there about a month ago to check it out, make sure everything was as easy as the install seemed. She paid me for gas and took us out to dinner even then.

The only reason grandparents get their grandchildren's friends to do stuff for them is because they know they can get it done cheap. Charging her the going rate sounds like a good way to get in trouble with the gf.

OP tell her to pay you whatever she feels like paying you. Pretend that you have no idea what such a job is worth. You'll likely come out better all the way around and at least you can't possibly hurt yourself.

I remember weeding an old lady's 5x10ft in garden as a teen in about 45 minutes and receiving a cool $100 when I used the above tactic.
