How much truth to this?

I doubt this comparison between the Mac G4 and the P4 is valid. Of course since its coming from apple.
Do they base that on photoshop? Just wondering.

Yep, The only thing Mac can gloat off of is because it is a few seconds faster on photoshop.

Wow, good for them. May be slower on everything else in the world, but if you boot directly into photoshop, buy the Mac and save yourself 2 seconds.

Considering the way Apple is proprietary with their parts I assume that only they can run the benchmarks as well

well, if you read the fine print, it is based on photoshop. i'm not surprised, apple has been more popular in graphics editing for a while now.

You also have the added benefit of Mac OS X (for when you are not photoshopping) which is the most beautiful and useful "consumer" OS out there right now. And you drop most of that legacy hardware x86 folk seem to hang onto.

g4s are pretty damned fast, so i wouldn't be surprised if anybody who frequently used graphics or video editing programs decided to go for a mac. performance isn't my gripe, i just hate the circular mouse. drives me up the wall.

My logitech mouse works perfectly in Mac OS 9/X. That was a concern of mine too before I took the plunge into mac world

Actually that one is gone now. Apple has what they call the pro mouse. It's a cool translucent optical mouse.

My biggest concern was that if Mac OS X sucked I would install OpenBSD on the ibook and I would need more than 1 mouse button for X
Best mouse I have ever felt (comfort wise) was the razer boomslang. It was big and fit my hand better than these small mice do.

Yeah the problem is on that page, they are trying to show that the dual 800 G4 is 87% faster then the p4 1.7 all around.

well i admit it's a little misleading if you don't look past the large text, but if you actually read it, you'll find that they're talking about graphics editing.

Very, Very Fast.
The new Power Mac G4 with PowerPC G4 processors demonstrates its speed against the 1.7GHz Pentium 4. Quite simply the fastest personal computer ever built to run graphics applications, this Power Mac G4 rips through tasks like Gaussian blurs, lighting effects, rotations and color conversions. In tests involving 9 Photoshop actions, the new 733MHz system is 33% faster, the 867MHz system is 58% faster and the dual 800MHz Power Mac G4 creams the 1.7GHz Pentium 4 by a blistering 83%.**

**Based on a suite of performance tests using Adobe Photoshop 6.0.

Most users would not delve out of thier familiar OS/hardware choice (wintel being the biggest choice) to buy something apple says is more powerful. And techies who would consider moving to another platform would realize the logic is flawed here. Never trust benchmarks from the company that makes the hardware or a company that is loyal to another company. That was one of the problems with mindcraft being hired by MS to bench mark between NT 4 and linux.

Heh this also reminds me when I went to an Adobe seminar a few months ago. It was sponsored by Apple and there were Mac zealots EVERYWHERE. Towards the end of the conference Apple got up to spam us with the G4 and it was like the zealots were hypnotised and cheered with everything the guy said.

I almost felt...violated.

totally agree... unfortunately the u.s. justice system doesn't (expert witnesses and all...).

having said that, i don't doubt that apples are faster with photoshop, though they might not be as fast as apple makes them out to be. apples make up one fifth of my campus' computers, yet there are the same number of apple graphics workstations as there are pc. and there are only apple av workstations.

Let's not get into a whole MS monopoly debate, that would be offtopic and pointless in this forum

Adobe works closely with apple to make sure everything works well. Video and image editting are the major strengths apple has over MS (and they are barely ahead).
