Don't really have any intention of ever living a big city where I'd have to do crap like pay some big amount of money per month to park.

usually if you're living in a big city, though, you don't need a car.

hell, before I hooked up with my boyfriend (who's a 20-30 minute drive from me) I went weeks at a stretch where all I'd ever do with my car was move it from one side of the street to the other for street cleaning.

the real problem is when you live in the suburbs but work in the city... you end up having to pay for parking in the city or at the train station.

LA is one of the few big cities in the world where you still need a car. Public transportation is so terrible here.

Pay for parking?! Well, sort of. I suppose that about 10 cents of my mortgage payment per month covers my drivewayS. I don't pay for parking at work.

I live in Montreal and I pay $0 parking, but I also live within walking distance of work. I don't have any fancy parking arrangement, I just park wherever is available and make sure the sign does not mean my car will disappear while I'm gone.

To park indoors at work would cost around $15 per day. To park outside close to work is $100 to $150 per month depending on where. To hell with that. Gas to travel in/out of the city or public transit passes are not much better than the parking, so IMO my solution is the only viable one.

I use public transportation. But to get to campus I walk because it's only 2 blocks or so away. It'd be pretty pitiful to drive that kind of distance.

i think the year pass at school is 125 or so...to park in a lot and stand out in the rain until a bus shows up to take me to campus

so...i dont really go to class if the weather isnt nice.

I was paying $300/month for rent ABP, but $20/semester in parking.

I moved downtown and now pay $400 ABP, but $0 in parking because I walk to school and work. Ahh, life as a student cheap-ass.

Driving in LA is fucked too, just try and make a left turn during heavier traffic, and good luck even finding parking most of the time.

Here in San Jose it's a lot more sane and I pay nothing outside the rare occasion where I have to use long-term parking at the airport.

Graduated from UCLA in 2009, paid $540 for the year. Got out right before the budget went to hell. To compensate for the deficit and loss in state funding, they just raised the fees and parking to insane numbers while cutting back on class requirements (no more second writing 2 required) and facility hours (there was no night powell for a while).

My freshman year, a daily pass was $7. Now it's $11. Freshman year, fees for the year ran ~$8k... now it's $11k.

I think they also need to raise money for all the dorms they're building (de neve G and H) + the expensive renovation of pauley pavilion.

10$ a month for my second spot in my apartments underground, the first spot is included in the rent. I work at a tow yard so parking at work is not a issue as there is room for 1000 cars give or take.

Nope, they gave me a loaner car while they fix my car. It's a 2009 Corolla CE and I'm pretty sure it has a better 0-60 than my 2010 Corolla LE (yes I've been flooring it up hills and on the highway).

You pay $100's to park. I recommend you take the money you spend on parking and buy gas to leave.

House/work - $0
If I go to the beach near my house, $0 because it's only a 15 minute walk.
If I go to the larger beach across the river, $5 for all-day public lots, and about $1/30 minutes for the meters.

I'd actually *love* to take the bus or public transportation and ditch the car, but public transportation doesn't run during my shift -- I'd have to leave three hours before I need to be at work. I can walk there an hour faster. And biking on this end of town to get to my work place is...dangerous if you follow the law and stay off the sidewalk. That's assuming there is a sidewalk. And I'd be biking at midnight. So, yea. I drive.

$85 a month back when I was in my undergrad. Berkeley's known for being nazis about apartment parking.

I paid $8 to park last semester at my local state school. I laugh at people who pay $190 for a permit and then tell me to get in on one because its prorated. Ok? So I can get one for $90, what's the point? I'm probably $4 into my roll of quarters. Hah. Street parking pro here.

I'm thinking of shelling out $85/month for parking next to my apartment. It's underground and protected. Then about $70 for parking at my school for a term.

After that I'm probably going to stop paying for it. The school I will be attending in September will be 2 blocks away plus whatever distance to get to class. I'm only doing it because of my schedule that I will be having. I don't need to waste time with parking.

I work for a parking lot management company and get free parking downtown, where I work. Then my residential permit is paid for by a large hospital nearby, because of their agreement with the city. All told around $300/month if I had to pay it.
