Now that I work from home I spend money about once per week. It's a huge money saver working from home. No gas to buy, no lunch to buy, etc.

I worked from home for 3 years. Was extremely glad when it was over. I loved it at first, then was impartial then hated it. I won't go back to full time WFH.

However, the financial benefits definitely were noticeable.

I'd say I spend money in a store or restaurant nearly every single day of my life. Weekdays its about 95% likely to happen. Weekends, about 80% likely.

Having 2 young kids in the car before and after work makes it difficult to run into a store and buy anything. Going into grocery stores or convenience stores is more of a chore than you realize without backup. (second parent)

That's saved me a lot on my commute to and from work. When I have leftovers for lunch and take coffee with me to work, I can typically go without spending anything. I probably do that about 10-15 days a month. On weekends, I don't spend anything unless I have to.

Most days.

- Grocery shop once a week. This includes lunches for at least a week.
- Typically get gas that day.
- I generally don't use vending machines.

And usually if I'm going to be stopping for one thing, I'll do a few other stops as well to get it all done at once.

All those apply to me, but I grocery shop less frequently on average. Gas I do the day I hit Costco, every 6-8 weeks, occasionally I need another gas stop (yes, I drive that little, and when I do, I piggy back as many errands as possible). Never use vending machines. I never hit coffee joints or convenience stores, rarely eat out. You won't see me walking down the sidewalk carrying a cup of coffee, soda or whatever. I think I do more online purchases than otherwise, around 60/year. To me, the UPS guy is Santa Claus! I love the guy.

wrong question,

should consider how many days you spend more than you earn.

I spend a lot pretty much every business day,

but earn way more

I eat for like $2-3/day and spend $2 on gas/day because of my short commute

Trying to save a shit load of money. I eat rice/eggs/chicken/corn/green beans/peas/beans/pasta/bread in some amalgamation or another.

I'll bring like, half a cup of basmati rice already cooked, 1 fried egg, and a quarter cup of corn/peas to work in a tupperware container and heat it up. 95 cents. Yup.

Why so drastic?

Trying to save about $10k/year to put into stocks.

I don't understand why that's drastic. Seems standard.

And this too. The average person eats for $11/day I believe. I don't think people really realize when they blow even $8 on a sub and a drink how expensive it is to eat out. You save a ton of money by cooking most of your meals, healthier too. Cut out stuff thats high in price right now like beef and you're down to $5-8/day for food easily.

Same here. Been working from home last two years and it's the one benefit that has prevented me from going to a better paying job. I didn't gas up my truck for two months. No need to buy new clothes. Gain extra hour before and after work with no commute. No expense for coffee/lunches. So technically I do grocery and spend once a week and I'm all set.

I can relate, I used to be like that. Now, basmati rice costs more, a lot more, than the cheaper rices you can find. It is better, I believe. I used to buy it in pretty big sacks (at Costco). Nowadays I get the organic short grain brown rice from Costco, haven't bought white rice for years.

I'm wondering if you can really eat for < $3/day, that's pretty tough. I couldn't get mine under $3.50. Didn't obsess on it, I just kept score for a few years for the hell of it. I was under $4, comfortably, and you can take that word broadly. I stopped keeping score 3 years ago. I wasn't stressing or pushing myself, still had some luxuries, but not as much as most people.

Try to include a reasonable amount of fresh fruit and vegetables, they say that it really helps your overall health.

And those coffee places, whew, does that blow your food budget?!

My primary care physician around 12 years ago told me I was borderline anemic and said I should eat more green leafy vegetables and red meat. I try to do that, have better blood test results these days. I eat some beef, not a ton, I'd say I consume under 30 lb. of cheap lean red beef/year that I buy at Costco periodically and grind myself and freeze in ~6 oz ground beef portions. I ration it, basically, cooking a couple at a time, crumbling it in a frying pan with seasoning, and storing in the refrigerator in a container for the week. I'll make myself a hamburger once in a while.

For additional protein: I have chicken in the freezer, but these days rarely cook it at home. I get eggs at Costco, buy egg powder online for recipes, consume a fair amount of non fat dry milk in various ways. I'll open a can of tuna occasionally.

I buy staples, don't mess with canned food much, I make my own whatever from scratch. I grew over 100 lb. of tomatoes this year and about 170 lb. of kabocha squash (most of which I have, hopefully overwintering, cooking them on occasion, that occasion depending on my desires, needs, and which ones are starting to get attacked by microorganisms). I could teach an eye opening home economics course.

For those who can manage to eat for less than $5 a day, how tall are you? I feel like at 6'2'', it's impossible for me to not eat for less than $10/day. And I eat pretty healthy too, but the cost to eat healthy is higher than to eat crappy.

You can pay more now or you can pay later. If you eat crappy now, you pay more when you have health problems, or you can pay more now for non-junk food and save on healthcare later. I'd rather enjoy good wholesome food now than shell out for healthcare later.
