Once a month, if that. My dreams are rarely frightening or scary... just mostly sorta weird.

NOt too often. Last night I had a dream that included that mannish tennis player with the diamond studded racket. That's all I remember... maybe it's for the best.

Well last night I had a strange but frightening dream, like most of my dreams. I was with someone and they were running away. They turned a corner and I could no longer follow them. I was screaming their name, over and over. At that point I realized I was dreaming, so it became a lucid dream, which I could control. So I concentrated really hard on this person and called their name again.
This is the weird part...
After I called their name, I felt someone roll over in the bed next to me (it was lucid so I was aware I was in bed), put their hands on my shoulders close to my neck and whisper "I have heard your calls many times in your dreams. I can hear you..." I shook myself awake and I could still feel where their hands had been.

you dream every night, but you don't remember your dreams. everyone goes through REM sleep (dreaming) several times every night.

Depends, is a nightmare:
1. scary or
2. will it have to make you ****** your pants.

1. Once in 2 or 3 months and 2. none in years...

EDIT: And no, not literally.

is there someone in your life who is changing or moving to a place (metaphorically speaking) where you feel they will be lost to you?

I used to have nightmares all the time when I was a kid but not any more. I miss them, they were like free scary movies.

if i eat a good sized dinner i have dreams, and about 1/4 of the time they are nightmares, and about 1/4 of that is really awful nightmares, and about 1/4 of those really bad ones really leave me traumatized. so about once a week i dream, once every month maybe a nightmare, once every 4 months really bad one. and about once a year i get the traumatic ones.

No.
My dreams are hardly metaphorical. There are no hidden meanings.
My dreams take my normal fears and expand on them.
But whatever grabbed me and started talking was not part of my dream. I was honestly surprised. It was lucid. I had control of the dream. It should not have happened.

My dad use to have terrible nightmares of his parents and siblings calling him over to a playground to play. The thing is, it would be his mom, pop, and 2 older brothers (all of whom had passed away). He would wake up mumbling and screaming sometimes, which scared the crap out of everyone in the house. My mom, who had just then became a Christian sought advice from our minister and gave him a simple phrase to call out if he ever had that dream. "Jesus, save me". Granted, it was in Chinese, but you get the point. So one night when he had that dream again, he called out and he said a calm he had never experienced before filled his body. Never had that dream ever again. I think thats when he realized he would live out his life a Christian.

Not explicitly implying you need spiritual help, but just a thought.

If the dream is reoccuring, definitely seek help.
Otherwise, its probably just normal every day stress. Exercise + meditation, perhaps?

EDIT: Did you test if the dream was in fact lucid? Invoke supernatural powers = best test ever (fly rocks!)

According to Joe Rogan, you'll go FKN INSANE if humans don't dream

My 'nightmares' involve me dying a painful death in a hospital bed, high-speed car crash or getting into a brutal fight in some alley somewhere, bleeding to death or something like that. They are not 'scary' but they feel pretty disturbing while I'm going through them and I feel weird for a half-hour after I wake up. Oddly, my life is pretty happy and decent with no violence, medical conditions or anything so I don't know where these nightmares come from.

It DOES affect my life a little - the high-speed fatal car crash dream recurs enough for me to always drive extra-cautiously.

I usually have nightmares when I'm under a lot of stress or my anxiety level is really high. They don't happen as much as they use to but I'd say once every month or so.

I rarely remember them. Like very very rarely but I wake up in sweat which says something probably once every two weeks or so.
