Never. I don't understand how people do that.

It's possible, and sometimes in the craziest ways you could imagine. A couple of years ago I took my brother and his family to the airport. Unfortunately I have a two door car. I stepped out of the car to let my nephew out of the car and he put his hand on the door lock button getting out. I did not know this and shut the door with the car running to keep the AC in the car while I said goodbye. There I was in the drop off lane with my car locked and running.

Never done it.

Although, I did loan my car to a friend and they thought it would be convenient to leave my keys in the car, so I wouldn't have to hassel much when I picked it up. Sure enough, the car locked itself and my keys were locked in. Turns out you can pry the door back a bit and use a ski pole (with the basket off) to hit the lock on the door. Took about 30 minutes of work to get the car unlocked.

Motorcycle, so never.

I have, however, left the key in the ignition when parked on the street overnight. Eek.

Once, a long time ago.

With current vehicle, it seems to know the fobik is in there, and won't let you lock the door.

Usually, using the door handle would unlock my door when getting out of the vehicle. Well, the door mechanism was going bad, so sometimes it wouldn't disengage the lock. It would open the door but stay locked.

Trying to do the quick dash to return a movie was one time it decided to stay locked. Car was still running too. Luckily, I had a spare key and roommate was home. Took him about 15 mins before he got to me. Few days later took the car in and had the lock fixed.

Keys? Never. I'm far brighter that that!

Once I did lock myself in the car. What a terrible ordeal THAT was!

You can't just hit a button to unlock it? Was the battery dead? Was it a newer car or older car? If older, were the locks broken?

Never.

My car has keyless ignition, so my keys are always in my pocket. If by chance I leave them out, the car will refuse to lock the doors and I believe it also beeps at me. Yay for technology!

Although, I tested this once with a friend. I removed the physical key that's inside the (Nissan) intelligent key (driver's door does have a key lock), and tossed the fob in the trunk. I do recall that it didn't work at least once, but I can't recall if it failed every time while in the trunk. I also don't recall if I could open the trunk by pushing the button (which requires the fob to be within about a foot).

I bought my first car in 1968. Since then, I've locked my keys in my car two times...and once wasn't my fault.

My 1989 K-5 Blazer had an aftermarket alarm that did not always function correctly. I was at the car wash, hitting the engine bay with high pressure to get some excess mud out of there so I left it running as I stepped out. Yeah. The fucking alarm locked the door as it was closing. This was prior to cell phone ubiquity, so I asked the car wash guys to use the phone, called a locksmith, and waited. And waited. They got there, tried to unlock it by slightly separating the wing window. The wing broke. FML. Now we're in the Blazer, but I get to drive around without a wing window. The locksmith paid for a replacement, natch.

Current car has a factory keyless entry, and I never lock the car except using the fob.

I've done it once....locked my keys in the trunk after getting a flat and having to put on the spare. By the end of the ordeal, I just wanted the whole world to burn.

I've done the opposite: I've left the keys in my pocket, while my father drove off!

After my final year at university, my father decided to pick myself and my sister up. My sister studied at a different university ~ 20 miles away.

Anyways, after doing a couple of things throughout the day, they decided that it was time to call it a day, and I wanted to drive myself to my place, since I knew the directions better.

So, I have the key in my pocket and start the car (keyless-go), and I get us to my place, at around 2200. My parents say "bye" to me, and decided to drive off. About half an hour later, when I'm just getting in the shower, I realized that I have the key in my pocket I called them as soon as I could, and the timing was perfect: they were just pulling up in to the driveway of where my sister was staying at the time, and they were just about to turn off the car!

Pretty much every day. Leave the keys in the console, lock the door and use the keypad entry to get back in. It's nice not having to carry keys around. I figured they were standard by now.

Once. Earlier this year. I used remote start to start the truck, but near the end of the timeout cycle, I had to haul some stuff out to put in the cabin. Put the key in the ignition, made 100% sure that the doors were unlocked, and shut them. Went to get more stuff to bring out to the truck. The timeout cycle completed, and when it did, it locked the cabin doors. I had no idea that it would do that when there was a key in the ignition, since that prevents the engine from shutting down.

Like Meghan54 the last time was 30 years ago, luckily I was at work so I made a slim-jim out of .030" hardened shim stock. The only thing was it took me ten minutes to figure out I had to push the lever I hooked on to down, not pull up.

Only once when I first started driving. After that ordeal I carried a spare key in my wallet just in case. My last three cars all have a factory FOB and I only use that to lock / unlock the car.

My car won't let you lock the doors with the key in the ignition when a door is open.

I can see how your incident would happen though. I am so used to my car alarms that I never use the locks or lock button on the car itself anymore. I just lock it with the alarm - impossible to do if the keys are in the car.

I also have spare keys in my wallet should something odd happen.

I never have. I always use the remote to lock the car so there is no chance of getting the keys locked in. The only possibility would be if I accidentally dropped the keys into the trunk, but my GF has a set of keys as well so it wouldn't be a big deal.

never.

I'm a bit OCD about it, I need to physically touch my keys before closing my house or car door.

Same here. Also, I have a thing about NEVER putting my keys in the trunk. If I need to free up my hands, I put my keys in my pocket.

(I have a feeling that my keys got locked in the car at least once in my life, but I cannot remember any details. It was probably someone else's fault )
