Every year it seems. Mostly because I always buy when there are deals so I tend to not get hosed when I sell so the spread between old and new usually isn't very much.

I only buy at the most opportune moment, for example I hold out on buying for example a 280x or 380 as I knew I didn't want 28nm mild incremental improvements and 14/16nm was coming within a year, so essentially I wanted to get a GPU for like 2 years, but they were all crap, so waited until 14/16nm was released and then bought a GTX 1060 6GB.

I think I would have definitely regretted buying a 280x/380 as the 1060 6gb is way faster and literally no game released in the past 2 years runs 60fps with even a mix of high/mid settings.

So yeah, I'll wait as much as need to to buy at the most opportune moment, though yeah I wasn't able to play many games in the past 2 years, but I was kinda not into it that much, just the occasional dota 2 was more than enough.

But yeah, now I've played quite a few games, though by far the best game has been the Witcher 3. I could literally play that game for 1000 hours if it continued having content released. Played over 150 hours with the main game and two expansions.

I buy high end every generation, often two for SLI or xfire depending on how well favourite games scale.

After realizing my then girlfriend didn't care about her computer's performance as much as I did, I swapped back to generational/refresh upgrades. She gets my old parts (which she doesn't seem to mind) and I sort of get to keep my PC a little "bleeding" edge. However, if the Volta generation is anything like the Maxwell/Pascal, I might just pay the extra tax for NV's Titan Volta (unless AMD release delivers, I haven't had a Radeon in my main rig in 3 years now ).

Got to enjoy life while you can

I just put in a 1080ti - after running dual GTX 670s since early 2013. Lack of SLI support in recent games was beginning to take its toll.

Normally every 2-3 years or when I can double my performance for a reasonable price. This upgrade was some unusual circumstances since I could sell my Nitro Fury for $75 more than I paid due to this mining craze. Used that money to buy a used EVGA 1080 SC. Pretty good upgrade for $70 or so.

Usually only once or twice over the life of my system. I just built a 6700k computer back in October and Jet had a really good deal on a MSI RX480 for $155 shipped so I snagged it and will probably use this card for 3-4 years then upgrade and ride that card out for another 3 or so years. After that 6-7 year time frame is up I will most likely start over with a new build.

Since I'm cursed with a 4K monitor I pretty much upgrade every time a new x80 or x80ti comes out.

I'm playing older games from my backlog on my 7970 which has been in service since January 2013.

I will upgrade to play GTA 5 at some point.

I used to play GTAV on an HD7970 with a 3770K, it ran fine on 1080P. Fallout 4 is a different story.....

Not very often. I hadn't upgraded from my gtx 560ti that I bought 6+ years ago. Doesn't quite beat my i7 920 I didn't upgrade for 7 years. I used to upgrade all the time but then I got old lol.

This year was my exception because I bought 4 for mining and that paid for itself already. So tl:dr was I didn't pay for my upgrade otherwise I doubt I would have.

Honestly, I'd say "as needed" but I try jump in when the timing is best in terms of bang per buck. In the 3D era I've owned (in order): ATI Xpert@Play, Voodoo II, Radeon 8500, Radeon 9800 Pro, Radeon X850XT, Radeon HD4850 and I've currently got a Radeon HD 7950. I'm waiting to see what Vega does to pricing and whatnot but I'll likely upgrade this year. So that means a new (or in the case of the Voodoo additional) card in 1997, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and likely 2017. So like what, every 3 years or so with a recent outlier caused by the loss of the 20 nm generation parts?

I got my RX480 just after launch last year. Previous to that used my HD7950 since its lunch. And that really really still played most games fine. I am looking forward to getting a Vega, assuming miners don't ruin it for us all.
