Yeah but if he's smart he's banking that extra money for a house or something. I know I am.......sort of.

No, I'm a linux admin for a data center. The company provides all that I mentioned. 3k miles away from my parents

For those of you making what seems like an above-average amount of money for someone your age, do you ever feel it's weird? Like while all your peers are making x amount, you are making 1.5-2x more? I am sure the young lawyers, pharmicists, etc can answer this one. I know you worked hard and all but isn't it a little weird? Or those of you making twice as much as your dad did at half the age. Just something to think about.

You have to remember that who your peers are, is very much defined by the path of education you take. I guess it would be more weird for those making six figures right out of college, than someone like me who graduated law school.

But even in the former case, and I know since I have many investment banker friends who started making close to or around $100k out of college, their peer group consists of fellow ibankers.

Its an interesting point since I remember thinking how much of a big shot I would be and feel for making $150k out of law school, but now that I am, I don't feel any different *because* I'm not a big shot. Just another lawyer in manhattan making the exact same salary as the next one (almost all firms pay exactly the same for the first few years of an associate's career). It's also exarcerbated by the fact that every goddamned person in NY is a lawyer or banker. The girls aren't even impressed by it much, and sometimes ask which firm I work at. To that I say, F*ck you, golddiggers!

I have noticed the larger issue is how much you spend vs how much you earn. There are many people who earn quite a bit of money and live frugally enough that they do not feel alienated from their peers.

38 years old, around 172k/year

Benefits are good 20 days paid vacation, 10 days paid continuing education
80 hours a week, most of the time I am surfing the internet due to the inefficiency of the system I work in.
This is pretty good considering I live in Rural MN

Important factors are safe environment and good schools for our kids.

I work for the government

I didn't think the idea would be so hard to grasp. Perhaps I am not explaining it clearly enough. Using your example, you can still figure out an "average". 22 year old making little money (20k) + 22 year old making lots of money (50k), averaged = $35k per year. Now if you are 22 making $70, how do you feel?

All your friends happened to choose investment banking and you happened to choose an equally lucrative ($$$) career? What are the chances? Not doubting you at all, but that's pretty interesting. I guess you guys are all "driven." My friends and I are as varied as you can get and our industries range from defense to non-profits.

No kidding.
I've lived with my sister for yrs and I saw her going through pharmacy school.
Seems like she spent yrs and yrs in school.
I don't think she really got a real job until she was 32.
I always wonder WTF is she doing.

Now she getting the last laugh.
She makes the most of anyone in our family.
$50/hr + OT = $120,000++ and thats in Florida which equals to $140+ in states with income tax.

you have to be lazy or a HS dropout to not make at least 75k by 20

So black and white...I'm 21 and make $6.50/hr, currently on my third year of my IT bachelor's degree.

They live frugally because they are cheap or because they don't want to feel alienated?

I wonder this too. Perhaps I am assuming they are trying to fit in.
