if it's technical like engineering, you got rided big time.

Yes I know, but what can you expect when no one wants you because you are on H1B?

What I don't understand is how all these 20 thru 24 year old's on here "supposedly" earn over 60k a year? lol I call Shens on some of you!

With two B.S. degrees and a M.S. in computer science I qualify for jobs around the 65+k mark...so how do all you without degrees and with just an undergrad get hired for that and more? I handicapped myself by serving on active duty (Army) for a good amount of years first, but hell I hope to make good money like all of you someday. For all you big earners Congrats! Sadly...my wife makes and will probably always make more than me. But as long as I get to keep spending money its all good.

Your situation is confusing. You are what I call the art spouse, except you are a man, which makes you only the second person I have ever seen in this position. What do I mean by art spouse? You ever meet those couples where the wife (and don't even get started, it almost always is the wife) is an aspiring opera singer, actor, or runs her own poodle charity? What do they all have in common? 99% of them don't ever make it and they make zero to negative money. So how is this possible? Well, they are always married to rich guys or guys that are willing to suck it up.

That's you. Except you are not doing art or painting or anything. You have VERY practical and useful and profitable degrees. Three to be exact. But let's dig deeper. Perhaps you are not artsy, perhaps you are the other type of person which is the lifetime student.

Three degrees, even with dual majors and an accelerated masters program probably took you 5-6 years. So while your peers were out getting experience on the job market, you were in school. And things were good.

Then after that, you went straight to the military. Again, your friends are now 25-26, 4 years at their jobs. Then after you got out, you went into research with no pay.

Your story is very common. You are not driven by money. You don't even want to make money. Why would you when your wife allows you to live your lifestyle?

Actually you are dead wrong. I started college at 17, studied for 2 years in pharmacy school, then when I decided it wasn't for me I joined the Army for the college money and to travel. While in the army I studied for my B.S. in applied mathematics. My wife was in the army as well, and also went to school on the side. I left the army and went for another B.S. in C.S. and then my Masters. I have been working (worked for the DoD; GS-11 OCONUS and CONUS) up until recently, and now contemplating a PhD and doing research (in order to get ahead). I am intensely driven by money, and think about it constantly. When my peers were in college and interning I was serving my country, which is a route many people take, yet I am not in the "class" that you described. Sure im 4-5 years behind people entering the job market, but I am happy I made these decisions and respect others that have done and do the same. So to sum it up...I am not what you call an "art spouse", or a perpetual student, I am just an average person whom served his country and is settling into "normalcy" a bit late, and wants to get as much education as he can.
Nice try though.

you have to be lazy or a HS dropout to not make at least 75k by 20, or if you end up going to college you dont earn until 22, but start at around 100k

my work is a couple miles from my house and i live to bike to work, but have been taking a break and letting my hootus heal, keeps getting caught in the spokes.

my GF does modeling but only because she enjoys it, i wouldnt feel like a man if my SO had to work.

There are so many things wrong with that post.

I don't make as much now as I did when I graduated (changed fields), but its not uncommon for undergrads to come out with jobs paying $60K+, esp in the software & IT business. Heck all you needed was a pulse (okay exaggeration but not that far off) to land an IT job 5-8 years ago.

unless you have firsthand experience in ibanking, i suggest that you keep your unsubstantiated estimates restricted to the confines of the law profession.

Who needs firsthand experience in ibanking to make such statements? I have friends at Goldman, Merrill, CSFB, Bear Stearns, and JP Morgan and various restructuring groups. I guess their experiences don't count?

And to be honest, I wouldn't WANT to be an ibanker at any of these places. IBanking is a bunch of A-type frat boys. Glorified salesman, really - sales pitch, roadshows, yuckeroo. And the kicker is that you job security is *pathetic* compared to the legal profession. Your upside is that you can make alot more money....after busting your arses for more than a few years.

Oh, and I, as well as most finance-based lawyers from the top NY firms can go be an ibanker *any* damn time I want - straight to associate, and in a couple years -- straight to VP. Not the otherway around.

almost 24, make 20k/year @ 60 hr/week = 6.66/hr w/ my two weeks unpaid leave. So much for grad school, when I get out that 20k will go to at least 80 and those 60 hr will drop to 40 which = 40/hr to start w/ my PhD

Thank you for explaining your situation. It does make sense now. I wish you the best of luck!

P.S. I should clarify something. You seem to have implied that I am docking you points for joining the military. I am not. You served your country. Good for you. Thanks for "protecting my freedoms." But the fact is, while you were doing this, your peers got job experience. I don't fault you for joining the army any more than I fault someone who is a perpetual student. How could I fault someone for learning? But you are starting to see the (financial) pitfalls of all decisions, even if they are "good"

I agree 100%.

Also caligayfornians shouldn't be allowed to vote. When you live in a state where you can make 80k bagging groceries, 140k is like $10 an hour in most states.

At 20 I was making 24k a year. Now at 33 I make about 30k a year from financial aid (no loans), but next to nothing from other sources. This is about tied with my highest ever income.

WELL some of these salaries are kinda bogus I believe. Now some of the folks who live in CA I know their salaries are a bit higher, not because they are really worth that much, but more of the cost of living in the area. Now someone I know very very well is a GM of a Phila branch of multi-multi million dollar company and that person with bonuses is not breaking 100K. And add to the fact a college degree and years 10+ in managing budgets well into the millions. Now just glancing, the average salary being quoted here is probably around 70k plus, nah that ain't happening. I detect a lot stretching the dollar, nothing wrong with that, but outright lying, well thats another thing.....................

LOL I agree. There is no way bleeping way at 25 some these 60+ salaries are real. There are only what 3-4 occupations that you could even possibly approach that level of income 2-3 years out of college. A doctor, maybe a lawyer, maybe even a top flight IT professional along programming lines, but thats about it. Hell at 25 your not even done medical school. And if its any kind of management I know damn well they are lying. Like I said except maybe like in CA, but thats about it.
