Exactly, some of us that are still in college and working can't afford to move out. But I'm moving out in a week, 21 here still in school and working and such.

I won't be eating as well, but oh dear lord it will be peaceful.

Depends do you own the house or does the parent/parents own the house? If the parent owns the house how much doi you contribute to the monthly bills?

I still live in the house I have lived in since 1968. My brothers and I now own the house and my mom has life residency rights.

Don't listen to most of these idiots.

Move out when the time is right. That may be 18 for some people, or that may be 20-something after college. Maybe you are single and got a lot of college debt and it makes sense to stay at home. There is no rule and if you have to ask when it is a good time to move out, then you probably need to stay home.

My current situation, I just turned 24 and am still living at home.

Now, the circumstances of that are:
1. Received BSEE last May
2. Didn't get 1st job until last October
3. Currently saving for 20% downpayment for a house. Based on my current budget and savings rate, I will reach my goal by the end of 2005.

So, I probably will just have turned 25 when I am moving out, but I will be moving into my own home with a nice chunk of equity already.

im actually close to your situation.

1. Received BS in computer science last May.
2. Got my first job in September.
3. Also saving for a DP on a house, not sure about the % amount because houses are pretty high right now. Hopefully by next spring i'll have enough.

I'm 23 right now, turn 24 in november. i personally think renting is the biggest waste of money. why not put that $$$ into mortgage instead of getting no returns from it? i'm also helping out around the house as far as $$$ goes.

there is no set age to move out, move out when you are ready to. if you think renting an apartment at the age 19 is a good idea, go for it. its all up to you.

oh yea, and i lived on campus 4/5 years i was going there. so i have been on my own before.

I propose setting up a family compound like they have for the mafia and other organized crime. This way, the entire extended family can live in one massive mansion and still maintain a high level of individual privacy.

it would be cheaper if I lived on my own...

I will be out once lease is up. No more..:|

I recall one time I heard a story in my high school. This high schooler just turned 18 and was out celebrating with his friends. By the time he got home, all of his stuff was outside of the house. His dad had kicked him out and told him to find his own place to live.

How fvcked up is that? Oh yeah...and by the way...this family was American. Sounds very typical.

I would say by age 25 you should move out. You should at least have student loans paid and a sizable house down payment ready by age 25 unless you did 3-4 years in graduate studies. If you don't have your student loans paid 100% by age 25 you are going to be fvcked if you keep them kicking around along with credit card debt when you settle down with a wife and start baking babies.

i'm 23 years old. i'd like to see you pay $19,000 in student loans in 2 years. yea good luck. that won't happen. my student loans are probably going to be my longest debt (aside from mortgage when i eventually get a house). however i don't have any credit debt, as i see you do. many people are different, so i don't think there is an age when one should have their loans paid or moved out of the house.

I moved out of the house at 18 because, like most teenagers, I wanted to get trashed and party my place. Now that I'm older and have settled down I really don't think I would mind living with my father again.

I don't criticize people that choose to live at home during college. I've probably spent over $25k on rent and other bills in the past 5 years. Whether or not it was worth it is debatable. I've had a lot of fun and learned a lot about life, but that's a lot of money for a guy who's graduating from college in 11 weeks and has absolutely no money saved up.

the way I see it ... 2-3 years after you get a full-time job... this is the best way to save money (so long as your parents still care about your well being)... so about 25. If you choose to go to grad school, you're on your own...

Sounds like you've got a good plan too. I live in southernwestern IN, so it isn't hard to find a nice place for $100k at all (that plus avoiding PMI is the reason my goal is 20%).

honestly, if someone has a fulltime job and has the means to support themselves and is living at home with their parents i can only hope that they are paying rent/food money to their parents.

i mean, if you are 30 years old and making 90k/year your parents should be living with you!
