I'd say within 2 years of graduating college, or within 2 years of graduating high school if you decide not to go to college.

upper 20s.

i know it's gravy moochin off of ma & pa, even if they don't see it as such, but having your own pad is too sweet to deny. get yo own crib, you'll like it.

Moms can still bring over the cookin any time.

I am 23 and still live @ home, I do plan on getting out whenever is financially feasible for me, but I am waiting for my next job whatever that may be, and then I'll go.

Thing is, my parents are awesome, I love them, I love being around them, and they don't care how long I am there. Which makes it much easier.

I'll say I'm 24-25 when I move out. (want a bit of time to sock some $ away before)

My ass got booted out when I was 17.

Out of 4 kids, the only one who made it into his 20s living at home was the youngest. AND HE STILL DOES at 28. Git 'er done!

Why move out at such an early age if you can live at home when you can save on rent and buy a house later on?

The American culture is changing and it's becoming more acceptable to stay close to your parents and live at home longer.

according to one of my printer tech's, you are never too old to live with your mommy and daddy. he's only in his 40's and lives with his parents still...

I think it depends. My sister lived at home for a summer while she was studying for the CA bar; I plan on living at home for at least one summer when I'm studying for the CPA exam (by the time I take the bar hopefully I'll either be married or living off of my own savings).

OTOH, if the person is fully capable of supporting themselves and don't come from a family tradition which celebrates living as a large extended family (I think in some cultures this is common or at least accepted), I'd say mid-20s.

I moved out of my Mom's house at 18. A few years later I moved 200 miles away and about a year after that I moved 2500 miles away.

i don't see why people would bother living with their parents, especially if they have a 90k paying job. Sure they'll say "I"m being smart, i'd rather save up the money and not waste it on an apartment and such". But seriously, why not point out the fact that your parents are still cooking for you, doing your laundry, paying your bills. its just easier right? right. i rest my case. . .

I think a good age is 21, sometime during college, but please people grow up.

alright keeping what i said above, that was what i originally thought, but after reading most of the thread. . . Move out when you're ready, but just don't leech off of your parents. If you are living with them, please pay for part of the bills, rent whatever it takes, be an equal contributor. I just have this thing against taking the easy way out, but I guess living with your parents can be pratical. sorry if i insulted anyone.

Not about wasting money but about taking responsibility and growing up and becoming an adult.

Somehow your logic escape me. Anyone could be responsible and be a grow up where ever they live. It is their action not where they live or whom they live with that tell me whether they are grow up or not.

How fvcked up is that? Oh yeah...and by the way...this family was American. Sounds very typical.

i'm sure his pop was a home owner, not a renter, and was still in the money making years of his life, and or his wife was, too.

anyway, on the other side of the token, that kid maybe needed a jumpstart kick in the ass? and the pop had the security to do that for him?

Everyone has their own standard on being a responsible adult.

For me, when I can afford 2 houses, then I'll move out.

Out of college and have a job. It's tough getting a job out of college these days. After college I lived with my parents for 6 months. Got a job and moved out for a year. Lost job and moved back in for 6 months. Got another job and am gone for good for the past 4 years (enough of a nest egg now that I would be ok if I lost my job again).

I think you're only a loser if you live at home while you work and you don't pay rent. Fine and dandy if your saving for a house, but throw your poor parents some $.

agreed. and the situation is always different for everyone. there's no way to "set an age" for this.
