How old is too old to start reading the Harry Potter series of books?

Thats what I keep hearing from HP fanatics. (mainly my wife)

I watched the first movie, and it kept me entertained, but she insists that I should read the books before watching any more of the movies.

I prefer reading books before watching movies anyway, but HP was not something I thought I would ever like. Guess I will give it a shot.

read them in college and onward (deathly hallows came out when i was ~26), and plenty of people my age were reading them. they are really well written, the first book is more kid-leaning but it matures quickly. i mean, there is a lot of dark material and death in the books, it's not exactly Toy Story or Shrek.

They read at like a 4th grade level, so if you can put up with that, I guess you can read them anytime. The stories themselves are pretty good, just a little bit easy to read.

I should read them. My daughter got the whole set, but she doesn't like them for some reason. I love the movies I've seen, so I imagine the books would be pretty good.

I read them in my early-mid 20s, somewhere around the time Goblet of Fire was being released (the book). Who gives a shit what other people think?

You're fine. I just finished reading The Hunger Games which is a youth aimed book as well. Despite being aimed at early-mid teens, it's quite a mature story and very well written. I haven't read HP at all yet, but I wouldn't think twice about what age it's aimed at. The only reason I haven't read them is I don't really care for the wizard/fantasy stories.
