inspired by the slave name thread... my last name is neither Americanized nor a slave name. my father's side of the family traces back pretty cleanly to 1600's Quebec.

Well not many Asians can probably trace their family names all that far back. The type of genealogical record keeping we are talking about is no where near as well preserved in say China.

My mother is Chinese and I could probably trace her side of the family back only about 4 or 5 generations before things would get REALLY difficult.

Genealogical records may not be easy to find, but records of a surname are easy. Consider the fact that chinese surnames have been preserved quite well since the early chinese dynasties, and it's not too hard to find out how far back a name goes. There's really only a couple hundred true surnames in Chinese. It's probably a little more difficult for the Japanese, but Korean surnames are probably similar to Chinese.

But never mind that, what happened to the asian presence on the board? that's what I was referring to...

Lol there is that too. Although truthfully there is a lot more variety than most people realize. How many smiths do you think there are. That makes it hard to trace western names if you happen to have such a popular name.
