I was able to trace my family name back to Scotland in the mid 1700's with a 5 minute search on google. One of my older brothers has done a lot of research and I know my great-great grandfather came over to the USA sometime in the 1880's.
1675 - swiss/german, when they came to the USA in the same year it changed somewhat , I guess because of the accent and how many people could not write at the time.
My surname is impossible to search for. There isn't a genealogy page out there that doesn't include it. It's German and means "spring" or "well" and I know there are people living in Germany that I share my last name with but I can't find good information on how old it is.
inspired by the slave name thread... my last name is neither Americanized nor a slave name. my father's side of the family traces back pretty cleanly to 1600's Quebec.
