I'm pretty new to the forums I think. I've only been here for about two years.

I first checked out AT after reading about how this guy in high school had somehow gotten a hold of the AMD K6-3 450 cpu and published a review on it before its official release. I joined the forums not much later. Back then there were video card and cpu wars raging. I did not pay much attention to the video card wars but I thought the AMD vs Intel conflict was humorous.

I remember '97 - '98 timeframe, changed jobs and got away for awhile and when I pop'ed back in in early '00, my screenname wouldn't work, so I had to sign up again.

:Q

Hard to believe it has been six or seven years.

Not necessarily ... the profiles will only show how long the user has been registered on this iteration of the messsageboards.

For example, Anandtech Moderator joined on 10/12/1999 9:26 PM. I'm certain that the "Anandtech Forums" existed prior to this date, but at some point changes occured and folks had to sign up again.

There was an Intel fanboy, troll under the bridge or something like that, who was really active but did not sign up when the forums were changed in 1999.

I've been here quite a while, too. Was a member of the previous version of the forums, etc. Also, I remember when Anand used to post in Usenet - long before these forums were created with his "Cyrix" user name.

Early '98.
I had just gotten my first CD burner and had a problem.
Anandtech solved it.

I started coming to Anandtech back when I used to goto Tom's Hardware and heard of a new website that was similar to Tom's run by a guy named Anand ... Back then the URL was still a pair.com URL. Didn't really visit the forums at that point, but later was somewhat active on the old boards. I remember back then Anand actually answered his e-mail too ... I sent him one asking about what SDRAM would be most compatible in my motherboard seems like yesterday!

Pretty hard to remember the details but I think that The good Doctor made some Disparaging remarks about the general intelligence of Americans or something like that and Harvey went to war with him via email over it. Was pretty interesting since they kept going back and forth and Harvey caught him in several lies. Like i said it has been a very long time so I may have the details wrong.

Here is an old post by Harvey that i dug up where he quotes some of the exchange between him and Pabst.

The quotes below are not on his site. They are from a series of e-mails between myself and Der Dokter. I posted them on around 8 - 10 forums, including AnandTech. I doubt they are still archived on any of them, but I still have the originals.

Harvey,

The fact that I replied to your email doesn't mean that I just assigned you to be my father. Your Nationalism is typical for your countrymen. A country without history and definitely without culture.

...A person who claims he is able to self reflect has no answer to the fact that Americans are STUPID enough to still go and play John Wayne, letting anyone run around with a weapon??? Is that 'just a law' or a serious neurosis??? If in your wonderful country 10 year old kids run around with guns and kill others, then it's maybe about damn time to start self-reflecting, isn't it? German HISTORY doesn't have anything to do with the pathetic foreign policy of your CURRENT government. So please try to see the truth in front of your eyes and stop excusing yourself with old mistakes of others.

Americans are world famous for being the most ignorant and arrogant people around. You guys think that you have the greatest technology - haha, the mobile phone system is a good proof, or the fact that you guys are still sending checks for payment = middleage, but you wouldn't notice it!! You don't see how much you suck, because once some US citizens leave your country they run around completely BLIND.

* * *

It goes downhill from there. THAT is Tom Pabst speaking candidly, expressing his "raw" feelings. I didn't make this up. As I said, I still have the original e-mails in my archives.

I give Tom full credit for publishing interesting some interesting stuff. I was originally quite friendly with Tom to the extent an unknown contributor can be. He even thanked me on his page for a contribution. Later, I first learned about OC-ing Slot A Athlons from his articles. I didn't bother to tell him about the mistakes I found in those articles.

Tom was at his arrogant best there. Unfortunately for him Harvey is a formidable foe in the arena of debate and Tom got his ass handed to him on a platter. It was very entertaining at the time. This goes way back to the summer of 98 as you can see from the dating on Toms email.
