What about "wealth" in terms of enjoyment? Work/life balance? Vacation? Cultural history? Environmental protection and planning?

When it comes to living happily, the EU tends to score way head of the USA.

But the things you mentioned are completely subjective and depend on your opinion. Money can be measured. Besides, if you're that wealthy, you're going to have the time and money to go on a lot of vacations to whatever country you like most.

It's worth US$97.9-trillion, according to The Boston Consulting Group.

According to a report by BCG, the world's worth rose 7.5% during 2006.

The group studied wealth in 62 countries which represent 96% of global gross domestic product. It also surveyed 111 wealth managers who oversee US$10-trillion in assets.

Europe and North American are the richest parts of the world, accounting for 71% of wealth. Canada and the United States together hold about US$36-trillion, with Europe at about US$33-trillion.

The BCG study also revealed rapid growth in the number of rich people around the world. The number of millionaire households grew by 14% to 9.6 million in 2006. "These were the richest 0.7% of households, and they owned $33.2 trillion -- or about one-third -- of global wealth," said Bruce Holley, one of the report's authors.

The United States had the highest number of millionaire households, followed by Japan, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

China had the fifth-highest number of millionaires, a sign of its rising economic power.

Some interesting statistics for ya. I find it pretty amazing that Canada and the U.S. hold down ~36% of the world's wealth. Even crazier is that 0.7% of households hold a third of the world's wealth.

Hum... those numbers are way off. It seems a very gross underestimation, and because I have quite a lot of respect for the BCG, I assume the journalist didn't really understand what they were talking about, or he/she felt free not to include some critical parameter used in the research.

The Hedge Fund/Fund of Funds industry alone has 14 trillions under management, that's 15% of the total world's wealth according to the study. And this is even without considering anonymous accounts...

So it's just by GDP? Cause I don't know how you'd be able to calculate the value of like the sistine chapel or like the coliseum or something like that.

Hey I think that 71% is kinda of low. We need to bring that number up to the 90%+ mark. Come on USA, let's do this!

All the prosperous nations should invest in a convenient bio-weapons program and should just gas the third world.

I know you've been around, so I have to ask... is this just a personal opinion? I know I'm extremely happy with where I am. Every time I go on vacation, I can't wait to come back to what I'm familiar with after only a week or two. I'm sure they can say the same over there, so what really is the difference-maker? Fewer who are below middle class over there?

More holidays, better healthcare, better schools, longer life expectancy, I'm grossly generalising and guessing but I understand some of those things are pretty good living in a few Northern European countries?

Except then who would we be able to exploit at low wage to keep garnering massive profits?

Someone has to work in the uranium mines and sweatshops so that we can have nukes and Home Shopping Network knife sets. *sarcasm*
