The website is bogus. It says that the population is 17,000. It hasn't been 17,000 for 40 years.

did anyone else notice the "county average" rather than national average in parentheses. If this is the case, we cannot make regional comparisons.

According to the glossary the total crime index is:
This index represents the risk of having a crime committed against your body or property. The national average has been set to equal 100. A score of 50 indicates that you are half as likely have a crime committed against you will a score of 200 indicates that you are at twice the risk. The index is calculated from a weighted and trended compilation of FBI and local reporting jurisdictions.

This is the city of St Louis. Certain areas of the city are even more dangerous. The reasons for the high numbers are racial in nature. You can figure out who is at fault. One ethnic group (nameless) is responsible for over 90% of the murders....even though that group is only about 50% of the population.
Come visit here, but bring your UZI. A recent visitor from Indiana arived late at night, made a few wrong turns, got murdered for the wheels on his van. And people wonder why I conceal and carry, why there are bars on my doors and windows, why a .357 is on the night-stand, etc.
Don't go into the city at all without someone who knows the areas to avoid. Have a nice day.
Why do I stay here?......Paid-for house, good memories of the old days, too stubborn to be driven away by the criminals with their drugs, guns, welfare checks in hand.

I live in Canada so I don't have an index...but I feel 100% safe walking around at 4AM and leaving the doors and windows open overnight...so its pretty damn low. I'm fairly paranoid, too.
