how should you split a referal bonus?

here's the story... a couple months ago, a friend introduced me to a friend of hers at a party.

he and I talked for a bit, he mentioned that he worked in IT and was unemployed (because my department was looking for someone to hire at the time), but he was overqualified, so I never even mentioned it to him.

just found out recently that another department is looking for people in my company, a position for which it seems like he'd be qualified for, and according to the friend who introduced us, he's still unemployed.

now the question -- if my friend gets me his resume and I get him hired, what's the standard way of splitting a referral bonus, since my company offers a pretty decent one? (1K if the referral gets hired and lasts for 3 months, and another 2.5K if they last a whole year).

Why would you split it? You get the referral bonus that your company pays to you, and your friend gets to help his/her friend out. Everyone wins.

nope... but wouldn't it be weird and awkward if he mentions at a later date that I made $3,500 for getting him hired?

Why would it be weird? The way I look at it, you are both winners:

He -- got a job
You -- got the bonus

Everyone wins.

Anyway, here is the way it will actually be split:

You - $1900
IRS - $1600

lol. if it goes through, I might use it to finally get certified

I'd be so screwed trying to get another IT job if I was ever fired... really need to pick up server+, net+, ccna, and the hardware cert that HP offers.

OK fine. $2000/$1500

At least in NJ thats how it is. Bonuses are taxed about 40-42%

Wrong again, jackass. They may be withheld at a higher rate, but they are not taxed at a higher rate! Have you ever seen a "bonus" box on an IRS form? Didn't think so, its all regular income.

First of all, no need to call me a jackass. I was only talking about the withholding, in other words, what he will physically see on his bonus check. AKA What he can deposit in the bank and use as cash.

Obviously it works out next April when he files his taxes, but at the time the check is cut, the IRS will get 40%.

I would call you a jackass in return, but my guess is you already know the truth about yourself.

Man1: "Hey, I owe you one. Introducing me to loki8481 was a great thing. Now I'm back in the workforce and I don't have to worry about my bills."
Woman1: "No problem, he's a nice guy. It is really cool that a couple months after you two met he had you in mind when he learned of the open position."
Man1: "Yeah, that was pretty fvcking awesome. For both of us really. I mean, I get a job, and he gets that bomb a$$ bonus of 3.5K for referring me."
Woman1: " :Q "

No, it wouldn't be weird.

You would only split it if there was a deal made prior to you assisting in getting him hired.

When I moved into an apartment complex that one of my friends already was at, he got a referrral bonus of several hundred dollars.

I never asked him for any part of it, but he did treat me to a steak dinnner!

right, it's standard. you get to keep everything.

BUT A Lot of times, you have to remind HR To pay you... they'd rather "forget" that you referred someone.

I would give him 400 bucks or something if he makes it past that three months and is a good employee. Although he is in a different department and he doesnt help you at all. I guess I dont know how good of a friend he is. If he is a mere acquaintance dont give him anything.
