though the LED could cause some temporary issues I would be more concerned about the food, all the sodium and fat cals are worse for your kid than the LED

An LED can cause permanent damage. If spots are there, they're there.

You're kid is mentally handicapped if they stare into a LED for more than 5 minutes - sorry.
Make sure they don't stick their tongues on any frosty surfaces either.

In all seriousness, I'm sick of other people making decisions the parents should be making on their own. Why is it that all the people with the most money get held accountable? Sick society, but it will never change.

To all you "overprotective" parents that seem to be really concerned about the toy you are giving your kids and are willing to email them about how its hazardous to their health: How many emails have you sent them regarding how ungodly unhealthy the food is for the kids? How many of you are interested in what your kids are injesting into their bodies instead of what they are playing with?

Why don't you browse on out to their super cool website and take a look at their not so cool nutrition facts. Then think about how many times your child has eaten there. Then think about why you are really mad at McDonalds, which is because of the toy they are giving your kid. Then kick yourself hard, really hard in the nuts and\or vagina so you don't raise any more unhealthy fucking babies.

You're saying some extra fat and salt every once in a while is worse than permanent retina burns that will be there for life? You, sir, are an idiot.

Of course. Skoorb is a bad parent because he doesn't check every Happy Meal for lasers before giving it to the kid.

A lower power VLD (which this product most likely does NOT contain) is not going to cause eye injury of ANY kind let alone ANY LED. LED's are not coherent emitters and not capable of collimation to levels reaching eye damage thresholds. Afterimages? Sure but that's hardly scarring.

The biggest hazard in any toy like this is the battery itself if swallowed. Small neo magnets found in some toys are hazardous too as a pair when swallowed can come together down the digestive path and cause intestinal blockage which is fatal if not treated in time.

OMG! A Laser Emitting Diode??!! What will they come up with next?

What I want to know is, who do you sue for there not being a warning label on the sun? I mean, it's so much more dangerous than "Laser Emitting Diodes" but our kids are allowed to play in front of it all day long! Unsupervised even!

This toy isn't going to hurt anyone, anyone reasonably intelligent at least. The marketers should have thought this thing through though. They should have asked:

1. People associate small red lights with lasers, and in the public's mind lasers = danger!
2. Is it worth it having a toy with a 'laser' and having people compain/return/whatever it?

You would probably have to take the LED out and stick it in your eye and touch the retina to cause any damage.

An LED can indeed burn your retina. Haven't you ever seen flashlights with a warning on the package not to look directly at the emitter?? All that matters is the energy density of the light focused on the retina. The sun's light isn't collimated either. Obviously this toy doesn't have a 1W LED but it's mean to be used at close range, and there is apparently some kind of lens that focuses the light

I have LED flashlights that put out over 200 lumens. These will not burn a retina. They warn people not to STARE into them. I cannot believe that someone could actually STARE into one long enough to cause eye damage. The energy reaching the retina will be below damage threshold by the way the eye (iris) works.

I suppose if you really went out of your way with a high flux (Rebel, Q5 Cree, etc.) and a carefully focused aspheric lens it's possible to hurt your peepers permanently. Obviously intentional.

With lasers it's completely different particularly at higher powers. The CDRH has determined that laser power < 5mW is relatively eye safe because if a person would foolishly stare into a beam the eye's blinking reflex will protect them in time. With higher powers damage occurs before the blink reflex can react.

LED's used in toys are going to be WELL BELOW these values. Most optical mice LED's are 10cd MAX and while this is bright to STARE into, imposes little eye risk. Common sense does apply though when STARING at things like the sun, for example.

OH. MY. GOD.

Why the hell would they waste their money on putting a directed light device into a children's toy? They wouldn't.

It's a little light, it can't hurt you.

...except that there will be no "permanent retina burns". Nice try though. And it's more than just "some extra fat and salt".

The toy seems dumb, but MrLee has it right...the food is worse.

This thread delivers. I know, lets focus all our attention on a crappy toy that may or may not be a killing machine and totally ignore feeding the kid food that is guaranteed to be chock full of carbs and empty calories.

I take it you're referencing me, due to the "overprotective" quote. I know about the food, I know about eating healthy, I know what's right and what's wrong. The toy is wrong, the food is wrong. This thread is about the toy. So STFU about the food.

The LED (I also know it's not a laser) is really damn bright. The F'ing instructions display, (in pictures, no less) so that kids that don't know how to read can play with this fun toy, how to shine the very bright LED directly into your eye. Anybody semi-intelligent can tell you that this toy is probably a bad idea. That's what this thread, and my e-mail to McD's, is about. How idiotic it was for McDonald's to release a toy like this to the public.

To answer your questions:
1. Three times.
2. I am.
To respond to your last statement: Fuck You.
