Well all I thought you needed to do (damn it's been a long time since I've installed such an old OS) was put in a win98 startup floppy disk, change to the cd rom drive, and type setup or something like that...
Well I can boot from the floppy (tried with win98 startup disk created from a utility I've had for a while), but that gives me access to the A: and C: drive, and a D: drive that has the exact same thing on it no matter what cd is in the drive (or same if nothing is there). I've tried other drive letters, but it seems that there is no drive letter assigned to the CD at all... so how am I supposed to access it? I have also tried to set the CD rom as bootable and it will not boot with a 98 or ME cd (I thought at least the ME CD would be bootable). I also tried with a boot floppy from XP but that wouldn't work at all.
Well I finally say screw it and take out the hard drive and connect it on my own computer with no other hard drives connected and just one CD rom drive. I tried various ways that I had already tried when it was connected on the other computer. The only thing that I could manage to do was to get XP installed. I thought maybe I could do that and then remove all of the system devices that were machine-specific, then move the hard drive to the other system (maybe a long shot). Well i tried that and no go unfortunately... C would not boot on the older computer at all (which figures, it's 200MHz )
I thought it was supposed to be much easier. I thought you just booted from floppy (can someone point me to the correct boot floppy that I should be using, something that gives me access to the cd rom drive), then changed directory to the windows cd and typed setup or something like that and the setup started. So what's the deal? What am i doing wrong? And will there be any problems with the win98 setup formatting the drive now that winxp has been on the drive (it was formatted with FAT though of course, not NTFS).
If it matters, the old computer is 200MHz with I'm not sure how much ram, but I think maybe 32MB and a 3GB HDD. Please help! My sister said that all she wants for Christmas was for me to make this computer run so she can speak to my nephew (her son) over in Iraq. I wish I could hook her up with the awesome $180 compaq deal coming up tuesday, but I don't have that option.
