Fixed for ya.

From my vast experience seeing cell phone users, what exactly do you talk about? From what I hear(thank you loud talkers), it's never important. "Did you hear about Jerry", "Oh, they have the blue sweater and red sweater, I can't find the white you want", "Like, my teacher, he like such a retard". Don't even get me started on the posers on the street/in class that clearly aren't part of the 'in' crowd, but frequently take out their phone to press a few buttons. "Hey everyone, look at me, I'm cool cause I have a phone."

Unless you're in business, you don't really get important calls, and why use a phone, the supervisors at work this past summer didn't leave us a phone number if the sh*t hit the fan, they say "Blackberry me" or "Page me". Emergency wise, how far do you have to walk to have access to a land line anywhere in a city; a cell would definately be more reassuring though. If ya ask me, people with phones are trying too hard to show they might have lives. End rant.

Some of the worst drivers on the road are people using cell phones. They should be charged with reckless driving on the spot or DUI of Cell Phones.

The concept of a cell phone is diametrically opposed to my core philosophy.

Actually, you sort of hit the nail on the head... except you've got it backwards. I *don't* have a cell phone, because I *DO* have a life. And, while I'm doing activities that I enjoy, I really don't want to be annoyed with an interuption over something that's not important. Besides, a lot of my favorite activities don't mix with cell phones too well... want to put your cell phone in your pocket and follow me in a kayak through some white water??

Plus, with an ability to think ahead, almost on a level comparable to Nostradamus, I'm able to call friends, sometimes even days in advance, to announce "hey, I'm going kayaking this weekend... want to go?" Sometimes, for those spontaneous spur of the moment things that I plan almost at the last minute (before leaving work), I simply rattle off an email to my friends, who like me have jobs where they can be reached by email.

Cliffs: If I'm at home, landline; feel free to bother me.
If I'm at work, I'm not allowed to have a cell on anyway.
If I'm not home, then I don't want to be bothered.
If my friends are not at home or at work, then they too don't want to be bothered.

I'd like to hear the OP's reasoning why a cell phone is necessary.

I had a cell phone for years, then i moved to another country and never bought a new one. I find it liberating, i hated having people able to get in contact with me 24/7. Now you can leave a message on my voicemail or IM me, and i will get back to you in my own good time.

It was particularly my old job that killed me on cell phones. Nothing i did was important enough for them to get a hold of me anytime, day or night, and since they didn't provide them with my cellphone, i regretted every giving them the number to mine.

I had one for awhile, but I didn't use it enough to make it worthwhile. I didn't talk to my friends on the phone very often before I got one and didn't really after I got it, either. I'm usually at a building with a phone and I have an answering machine at home.

And as other people said, it's nice to not be able to be reached all the time.

Same here.

IMHO talking on a cellphone is the OPPOSITE of having a life. Most of my conversations are like:
"Hey"
"Hey"
"Wanna go catch a movie or something?"
"Sure, meet you at your place at 7PM?"
"Sounds good, see you there"

My favorite cellphone story occurred on the front steps of the Student Union. As I was entering, a young girl was shushing people around her she didn't know because she couldn't hear! Hello! Your on a @#$%! cellphone. You know.....its um.......portable?

I ride a bicycle to work. I can count the number of times I've needed a cell phone in the past year on one hand.

We have them...fvcking electronic leashes...I view them as sort of a necessary evil, since most of my life, I commuted long distances, and since they became available, they have helped a couple of times in situations where I'd otherwise have to walk/hitchhike to a pay phone, or in times where 9-1-1 needed to be called to report a serious accident on the highway...otherwise, real PITA. I don't take calls when I'm in a restaurant, I turn it off in theaters and other public places where use is inappropriate, and rarely give the number out.
I have to wonder how we ever built America without them, because on every construction job I've worked, foremen, superintendants and leadmen spend half (or more) of their day on the dammed things working out problems, big & little. Before, they'd actually have to visit the job, or have a face-to-face meeting with someone to solve problems. Nowdays, pick up the cell and call them...from almost anywhere.
I support bans on them while driving however...people get on the phone, and go on auto-stupid.

I've never had a cell phone, and have survived quite well. I think it's one of those things that if you don't have, you don't need.

I have a Tracfone (against my will) but I never use it. It sits in my car for emergencies. If people want to contact me, they can IM me, email me, show up at my apartment, or wait until I come on campus. I get along just fine without using the damn thing. During the two weeks before I had internet access I used it a bit but now it is wonderfully superfluous.

How do you guys with only a cell phone make such little calls? Don't you have friends? Girlfriends/boyfriends? FAMILY?!

I only have a cell phone because it's cheaper for me than a landline, but I have the cheapest nationwide plan. The only convenience that I get out of it is that when I travel for work during the summer, I can still use the phone without worrying about long distance charges and such. But in reality, I would get by just fine with a landline. If I'm at home, there's a landline I could have. If I'm at work, they have a phone. For the little inane ramblings that most people use the phone for, I use e-mail and IM. I mean, even my grandmother has IM and an e-mail address so it is as functional as a phone.

ive got a cell phone but I leave it turned off at all times. If I need to make a call I will turn it on, everyone I want to talk to is with me when I have gone out and if they are not with me I will talk to them when I have gotten back home.
