IS there a site that has reviews of like 10 different gigabit N wireless routers so i can compare several???

Every router i look at at newegg has like 70% max 4 or 5 star rateing, i usually look for a 80% 4 or 5 star rateing on a product if possible, but it looks like it does not exsist.

ANy sugestions would be greatly apreciated.

I have to set up a network for a business and need speed and reliabilty, i dont want to drive 30 miles each way once a week to reset a crappy router.

Everytime i buy a router, it is not availble like 6 months later cause they have a new model, and most of the time the review on the new model are worse than the older model.

I am useing a Belkin cheapo $40.00 10/100 N router right now, but range is not great, and i set-up a trendnet Gigabit N at a friends house, but that model is not available anymore.

cheap and good - water and oil.

cisco makes some nice smb products that are not rebadged linksys. check them out.

separate router - switch - and WAP into three objects if you want more reliability. that is for sure.

Cisco's managed small business line is a steaming pile of shit.

This. It's more expensive, but if you want more flexibility and greater reliability, buy a separate switch, router, and access point.

Even the best equipment will sometimes need to be rebooted. That's why you document the procedure and train someone on-site how to do it or you call them and walk them through it. The time it would take you to drive there is time the business is down.

With that being said, if you want speed and reliability, you'll need to go beyond the SOHO routers and into something a little beefier (and more expensive), like an Aironet from Cisco and use it as an AP.

If the business is not willing to pay for something like that, than just get something like a DIR-655 (been around since 2005 or 2006 and still being made) or a DIR-825 (a dual band N router), or whatever the Linksys equivalent is. I have not had any issues with my DIR-655 and I got it in the first couple of weeks after the router was released. It has been a great device. At any rate, www.dslreports.com has forums dedicated to hardware vendors and you can glance over those to get some ideas on what is hot or not.

blanghorst, TOTALLY disagree.

There is no reason to reboot network gear unless you're changing code, and even then a reboot isn't needed depending on platform. Of course unless there are serious bugs.

I agree with you in general. My main point with the reboot comment is that regardless of what might be causing the issue, it is insane to drive 30 miles to simply push reset and then leave.

Meh, 2 hour min labor charge plus T&E.

Look, I'm just a plumber. I show up to turn a faucet for you but I'm still gonna get 400 bucks from you before I leave.

Click wireless or LAN and then charts for wireless or LAN performance.

Yeah, but if you're charging a minimum labor charge, you're still going to get that whether you drive in or whether you log a "support incident" on the phone and walk them through it.

I agree that rebooting a router SHOULD, in theory, not be necessary. But too many of these damn SOHO routers REALLY SUCK, and need rebooting TLC once in a while.

Thankfully, I haven't been plagued by too many of them. Running a Linksys WRT54Gv2 and a Motorola WR850Gv2 in WDS mode, not with DD-WRT firmware (stock Linksys firmware supports Lazy WDS mode, and then-beta 6.x firmware for the motorola explicitly supports WDS mode), never need to reboot them unless there has been a power outage (must power-cycle the two routers in specific sequence to get Lazy WDS to work properly).

Also running a Verizon/Westell 327W that rarely needs rebooting (sometimes the wireless goes down, too often, grr), and some Netgear WRN834Bv2 routers flashed with DD-WRT, that generally don't need to be rebooted.

Edit: My mom, on the other hand, hasn't had such luck. I hooked her up with a refurb Netgear 824 G router, it was bricked within a week. Went back to her place, and all of the lights were flashing, as some sort of error code. So I replaced it with a TrendNet 652v2 that I had purchased at Newegg. Flashed it to the newest firmware, and installed and configured it. Several days later, her internet wouldn't work. Not just wireless, but wired too couldn't get a connection. Had to power-cycle the TrendNet. I'm still suprised the LAN ports died, that should just be a switch fabric chip, completely seperate from the router, right? Hopefully it won't happen again.

A TrendNet 652v1 is still running pretty well at a friend's house, doesn't need rebooting for the most part. Even with torrents.

If price dosent matter too much check out the WNDR 3700 from netgear. It got an excellent review on smallnetbuilder and mine has been great from the get go.
