Don't worry I'm sure all the armchair Generals here know everything there is to know about combat.

I've never been in the military, but it seems reasonable to me that when it's you and a few guys in a vehicle surrounded by probably hundreds of randoms, some of which may be shooting high caliber bullets, or preparing to toss explosives your way... that you miiiight not just hide in the Humvee and hope they stop.

Not saying the answer is mow everybody down in sight, but I would done more than just "take cover".

Vietnam was fucked up. If you get the opportunity to speak to any veterans and they are willing to talk it is always interesting. Sadly more and more are passing away each day.
My old man served from '67 to '68. 1/9 Cav A Troop.

Some of the stories are truly messed up. Over the years as I have gotten older he has shared more and more. He did 6 months as a gunner in scouts and then went on to gunships (said he wasn't a fan of getting shot down so it was time to move to a larger helicopter).

Works for me. My assumption is that once people start assaulting military vehicles in a wartime situation they have decided to become combatants and the guys in the humvees are free to deal with them as they would any other combatants.

A real true armchair general has commanding knowledge about comfort.

I for one enjoy 60ish degree evenings with a light breeze, the pleasant aroma of pine in the bonfire burning, a big stout glass filled to the foamy brim with black black beer, and a cigar the size of texas.

That isn't exactly how it works. Only the people attacking become combatants. What they did is understandable, but still illegal.

Also, the Tommy Lee Jones movie wasn't about civilians. It was about the morally ambiguous, yet illegal, actions taking by someone to save their troops. Samuel L Jackson executed an unarmed POW in order to get information from another about the location of unit about to ambush his guys.

no it was about terrorists firing weapons during a protest outside a consulate in the meddle east and the marines firing back into the crowd

most of the movie was about the legal proceedings after that incident

But the climax of the movie was when the prosecution dug up the VC that was there, and he admitted that he would have done the same thing if he was in SLJ's shoes. Then he and SLJ salute each other outside the courthouse. It was a ludicrous scene.

Didn't he answer 'yes' to every single question or something like that?

I would exit the vehicle and double jump while shooting a rocket at my feet propelling me over the crowd to safety on a roof. I would then call in a danger close airstrike. How hard is it to think of that......Jeez.

The spitting was tragically misguided. There really isn't a good way to get through to politicians though. Maybe shitting on politicians doorsteps? If you do it at the government office, it'll just be some poor janitor that has to clean up human shit, but at their home, they may have to deal with it themselves.

Some of the second-hand stories that are being told in this thread are best verified. Use this form http://www.archives.gov/research/order/standard-form-180.pdf to get publicly releasable information. Units, awards, training and duty assignments aren't secret. If the person doesn't sign the form you're not getting any personal information, just a concise public record of their service. If they do sign, they might be flattered that you took a real interest in their service.

I know a guy in the army and he said soldiers bought the most stupid shit imaginable after getting home. He said one of his guys was like "Ohhh I gotta' get a gold chain..." after getting back from Iraq and spent like $10,000 on some custom made gold chain he could wear on his neck with gems and everything. Then the guy got asked a couple weeks later "dude where's your gold chain" and apparently someone had held him at gunpoint and taken it.
