Heh how do you avoid paying a customs fee when you are recieving a package from someone in the USA. I am from Canada and I always get nailed with a customs fee when i buy stuff from people in the USA. They ship it via USPS too. So if anyone knows how to send items to Canada untill the person in Canada paying a custom fee, lend me some help so I can tell the person shipping me to follow. Hope that makes sense. thanx

One day I got to take a photo of a package of what Canadian customs will do to a package. I sent a book to a friend, and when he sent it back, I literally had to pry it out of my mailbox. Why? The bozos literally destroyed the box and taped it up so fast and with so much tape, that I had to pry it out of the mailbox of it's glue and literally saw the packing tape off (scissors wouldn't work).

Best thing you can do is get political and demand those fees begone. Is it only applied to electronics? Because those in the USA aren't slapped with customs fees, got my North Face crag pack from Montreal with no hassle.

Dude, it's entirely not worth trying to defraud our government. First of all the penalties for doing it are quite severe. THey can sieze your goods and then still fine you. Anyway, there are no duties at all on computer goods from the US coming into Canada. There are however taxes (GST/HST/PST) and that's it. Being in BC you pay what, 7% GST and 7% PST? Big deal.

Not worth being illegal over.

I believe there are 3 different fees you can pay - taxes, duties and brokerage.

Taxes - self explanatory
Duties - depends on the type of item, where it is from
Brokerage - The cost of the courier to do all the customs stuff for you. This can be very expensive by far! I ordered a juicer from the US for about $300 and there were over $100 in brokerage fees.

over %80 of canadians live within 30 miles of the border, don't you got some family near on the US side? I live around Seattle and my Aunt lives in Coquitlam, BC around Vancouver and she just has stuff sent to me and comes and gets it.

gifts up to certain values are exempt, but, if its not a gift then this is fraud. Might work once or twice, but if you get packages on a regular basis then you WILL get busted. Federal charges would not be fun, especially in this post 9/11 world.
If the package just comes across the border, customs/duty charges are usually billed and handled by a customs broker who usually charge 5-10 dollar handling fees, which is alot because if your 50 dollar value package comes across the border the duty should only be 7 bucks (i think).
Get the sender to write on the package and on the decleration sticker "reciever will clear customs" then you pay the fees yourself and dont have to pay the broker, could slow down your package by a day or 2, but you'd save that 5-10 each time

Ive boughten several items from Canada that were made in Canada and there are no fees coming back into the US...furthermore I got back part of the taxes as well.

So id assume that Canadians can also buy American made items with no tax penalty as well.

don't ban me man....I was just wondering about this stuff. I am not trying to defraud the government or do anything illegal. When did posting asking for some info become that they are going to defraud and commit illegal activity. Thats like saying, that when someone says they wants to buy something from the forum then they wanted it smuggle it across the border with cocaine every single time a deal goes down. So just relax a little man. thanx for the info though.
