How to block facebook

I tried searching all over but I can't figure this out. How do you stop Facebook from being logged in to random websites and knowing what you are browsing. For example, I went to rottentomatoes.com to browse some movie reviews and somehow facebook automatically connects and starts spamming me with suggestions about movies that my friends like. I absolutely hate this, I don't remember ever giving FB permission for this type of access and I never clicked any FB button on such websites to begin with.

its other sites reading the FB cookie. don't stay logged into FB and this wont happen, also i think you can stop it with noscript

Probably this. I haven't investigated but I imagine AJAX has something to do with this.

Note: I figured from the description that this "feature" is the instant personalization option. But that is the first thing I disabled when I noticed it and yet the problem still exists.

I think it's Facebook Connect (connect.facebook.com?), but what I do when I browse my SO's account (no I don't have my own) is to use a private tab in Opera. This way all cookies get deleted as soon as I close the tab or browser, and there is no cookie-sharing between regular and private tabs.

I've tried to convince the SO to do this regularly, but to no avail. *sigh*

Thanks, that was helpful. The two solutions are apparently to disable third party cookies, and add connect.facebook to adblock filter.

It's funny that even with instant personalization disabled, it is still functional. The facebook site says "it's a bug". :\

Not sure what that answer is though - I just stay logged out of my FB account. It's definitely annoying the onslaught of things that try to connect your facebook account. It's like...just leave me alone motherfuckers. Leave facebook at facebook.

Also I'm sure noscript would do the trick, but I don't like leaving it on all the time as it's more of a burden than being helpful.

I went to rotten tomatoes to see what you were talking about. I have to say it is the first site I've ever been to that did that. At first it had a login button like most sites, but apparently after a moment it just logged in for me. That is a privacy issue with rottentomatoes, not facebook. It doesn't take any of your information though, it's actually retrieving your friend information. If you have flixster blocked on facebook, then any friends that go to rottentomatoes won't see your likes on there.
