By default, the files with different extension tend to open with some randomly chosen default application. Many times, this can turn uncomfortable for the users. Mac OS X allows the users to choose their preferred application as default for opening files of a specific format. Once, this is done, all similar files can be opened with the chosen default application. Here is how you change the default app for the file on the Mac system.
Step 1
Select the 'File’
Select the ‘File’ for which you want to change the default app on your Mac system. You can select any file by a single click of the mouse.

Select ‘Get Info’
Next, you need to select the ‘File’ option that is present in the menu bar of the Mac screen. From the list of options, select the ‘Get Info’ option to view the information regarding the chosen file.

Select ‘Open With’ Option
In the get info window for the chosen file, you will find information regarding the file like its size, created and modified date. Click the arrow mark near the ‘Open With’ option as shown below.

From the list of suggested applications, you can choose the desired one. You can also choose a desired application from the app store by downloading. Here the ‘TextEdit’ application is chosen as shown below.

Select ‘Change All’
The next step is to choose the ‘Change All’ option. This will ensure that similar files with the same extension always open using the chosen application.

Select ‘Continue’
You will find a dialog box waiting for confirmation. Here you need to press the ‘Continue’ option to apply the changes to your Mac system.
