Hello,
I recently bought a new HDD ,but I want to connect both my old and new HDD in the same PC, I don't know how to do jumper settings and also don't know if a separate SATA cable is needed.

If so how to make the new HDD a master and the old one a slave.?

Please help ,regards

Is the old HD also SATA?

Do you have any of those wide (at least an inch wide) but flat cables in the PC, that normally connect to a hard drive?

If both are SATA just plug em in. That M/S thing is a relic from the PATA/IDE days.

Yes, both the HDD are Sata ,
I meant to ask do we need two sata cables to connect two HDD or just connect Sata to master HD and only the normal grey coloured (flat type one) to the slave.

Thanks for your help.

There is no master and slave with SATA.

Each drive will have its own data cable. They are flat and no more than a half inch wide. The connector itself may be flat or have a right angle. The data cable connects directly to the motherboard.

As far as I know, the power cables that have 2 connectors can be used for 2 separate hard drives. The power connectors are close to an inch wide.

Everything should be keyed so that the cable will only attach properly in one way.

So, you'd need 3 cables minimum: one power and two data. But 2 power and 2 data would be fine too.

You'll also notice that you can assign which drive you want to be "first," and which you want to be "second." So it's not like a master/slave, but instead it's just which has priority.

Also notice that your motherboard may have numerical labels for each physical port, like SATA0, SATA1, SATA2, SATA3. So you can easily just swap cables and connect the cable for the drive you want to be 1st as SATA0. But, you still have the option to re-assign the drive priority in BIOS. So even though SATA0 would typically default to the first drive, you can still switch it and make the SATA1 drive be the first drive, and SATA0 (or anything else) be the second etc. This can come in handy if you have different operating systems installed on different drives, because the computer will boot off the first drive, so if you change which drive is first, you can change which operating system the computer boots into.
