Go back to a game save before the ending and keep playing - or wait for DLC that'll allow you to keep playing even after you finish the main mission...

There is supposed to be a special autosave done by the game just before the point of no return. Load that, play.

You can't continue the story after the ending without some future DLC.

Look up mods on Fallout 3 Nexus or similar sites. There are quite a few which remove level caps.

Roll up a new character, play with opposite karma of your earlier character (evil if you were good earlier, good if you were evil earlier), find side quests, look for l33t it4mz, etc.

My second round through was 'evil', but I still couldn't pull the trigger on Tenpenny's quest.

They really dropped the ball with the ending and the levelcap and high level combat.
I had maxed out my level at 20 before I even started the main quest. Just by doing sidequests and wandering through the wasteland. Hadn't even discovered half of the map locations.
Now I could go on with the DLC but without earning XP there is no purpose to it.
Combat feels like I entered a God and endless ammo cheat somewhere. Basically every enemy can be shot with 1 headshot. It's ridiculous. I have like 5000 ammo for each weapon and it just goes up.
Bethesda either were totally blind during their playtests or they artifically set the limit that low to get more DLC purchases. That the level cap will only be raised with the last DLC speaks toward them being clueless, rather than doing it for money.

I never thought I'd say this but I think i like OBLIVION's leveling system better. At least you could focus on a different combat style /weapon and learn this too and have the game be a challenge again. With FALLOUT3, all you can do is wander endlessly through subway stations on the search for skill books.

Yeah, that's one thing that sucks about Fallout 3 - beat the game and it's over

And the horrible voice acting, and the bad storyline, and the endless walking.

Definitely. I hit the cap WAY before I beat the game, and that took a lot of fun out of completing the game for me.

The level cap was set low so that ADD ravaged console fanboys could think they achieved something in the game.

True. I read somewhere on the internet (so it's gotta be true) that less than 10% of games get completed. I don't mind when games with a great story are a bit easier. But the meat of Fallout 1&2 was the great fights. They really needed to revamp vats or make swarms of enemies so you have to use it sparingly.

I loved the game, but I saw the need for lots of improvement.

The highlevel gameplay is utterly broken. I was a oneshot-killing machine. Unstoppable. Enough action points to waste 4 supermutants in a row.
The only challenge I had was keeping the braindead dog alive.

It's all because of VATS. I love it and hate it at the same time. It really kills the "fps" part of the game.

Try a new run without ever using VATS and never increasing any weapon skill beyond 50.

Why? I'm a player who wants to outsmart the game mechanics with skill and wit. I'm not dumbing down my own skills so the game can catch up with me.
They designed VATS as the main gameplay mechanic and it's thorougly broken. Bethesda is awesome when it comes to world building - game building not so much.

Talk to the well-dressed guy in the bar in Megaton. He'll give you a quest to nuke the town.
