how to copy game disk on HP8250?

I have a number of games I'd like to copy and use as the kids are hard on them and I'm fairly new with my cdrw.
I tried to copy UT and I get a cannot read some tracks on source disk. I'm using adaptec but I'm aware of some games putting encryption or overfilling the disk to exceed a 650.
Is this my problem and is there a simple way around this?

Try using Clone CD, or maybe Nero.

another easy way is to copy the CD as an ISO file (that exactly copies every byte on the cd so you dont have to deal with encryption) then burn that onto your disc. there should be an option for copying as an image. use that.

UT has SafeDisc protection. My game backup setup consists of a Toshiba SD-M1212 DVD-ROM and Mitsumi CR-4802TE CD-RW in one machine, and a Toshiba SD-M1201 DVD-ROM and Plextor 12x4x32x CD-RW in the other machine. It can take up to 10 minutes for my Toshibas to get past the errors on the UT disc, so be patient. If it seems like CloneCD isn't creating an image file, just give it time.

Toshiba's DVD-ROM drives are excellent for imaging discs, reading subcode data, etc. Diablo II cannot be backed up and work if you cannot read and write the subcode data, which my DVD drives can do just fine.

Anywho, I've imaged and burned a backup of UT with my setup. From CloneCD's Hardware Requirements page, it seems that the 8250 cannot read subcode data. That may or may not be a problem backing up UT.

CloneCD allows you to make serveral writes with the demo software. At $50, it was well worth the purchase price for me.

i tried clone cd but it took 30 minutes to image 1%
i tried a utilities disk and it worked fine, 6 minutes to image and 25 minutes to burn and worked fine.
maybe i'm using the wrong settings for it but tried twice with same result for UT.
i got nero as well but it wants me to uninstall adaptec before running it so haven't done it yet.

Okay, I tried half life opposing force and let it go for a half hour to 3% then it whipped through the rest in ten minutes and I was able to create an image and burn it to disk.
I guess patience is the key so I'll try UT again.

WOW! It took an hour 35 to create the image! That's quite a program they put in. After an hour it was done 2% only them pretty fast after that.
Seems like a good program. So far I've done a couple games everyone is playing and they all work fine.

Yeah, it's the errors. Toshiba drives are known to "look the other way" when encountering errors, which is why it takes 15 minutes for me to image UT. If you can, add a Toshiba SD-M1212 DVD-ROM to your system. They're about $100, and well worth it, especially if your burner is able to burn the SafeDisc games and make working duplicates.

Yeah, it's a long time but I only need the one copy and UT seems the longest and that's done now so don't think I'll change out cd players but I'll keep it in mind.

Clone cd seems pretty expensive to buy for a small program that I'd only use once in a while. It's well designed and quite intuitive too.
